About the role

The Petascale Campus Initiative (PCI) is the result of the ‘Building the Petascale Campus and On-Ramp Knowledge Workforce’ strategy, a five-year initiative to improve compute, data and informatics capabilities at Melbourne to support data-intensive research.

The PCI Project Team was recently established, consisting of a Senior Academic Convenor, and two Academic Convenors specialising in HASS and the Physical Sciences, and a Facilitator. The team is responsible for University-wide planning, strategy development, coordination and facilitation across digital research infrastructure, services and expertise. The initiative is hosted in Chancellery (Research and Enterprise), and work closely with University Services and academic divisions.

A position is available for a MDHS Academic Convenor to help develop a vision of the digital research campus in a rapidly evolving environment and will enrich the project with their respective expertise. They will already be practitioners in the use of digital technologies in a discipline or research domain area.

As the MDHS Academic Convenor, you will shape the Petascale Campus with your knowledge of current and future research needs across digital research infrastructure, informatics, as well as digital preservation and data dissemination within MDHS.

You will be responsible for engaging with academics and other services and platforms across the University and the broader sector, as well as helping develop University-wide engagement and communication strategies to build awareness of digital research capabilities at Melbourne.

Finally, you will help shape the next generation ’On Ramp’ workforce, which is a critical bridge between the Petascale Campus and Melbourne’s digital method and data intensive research ambitions. The ‘On Ramp’ program is  key element of the project, and is intended to build capacity in informatics expertise across all Faculties, as well as broader capability plans aligned with the current and future needs of research at the University. In support of these ambitions, developing strong ties to the research community as well as platforms within the digital research platforms ecosystem will be paramount.

The time fraction of the Academic Convenor roles is negotiable, from 0.40 FTE to 0.6 FTE.

About you

  • An existing academic position (continuing or fixed-term) within MDHS at the University of Melbourne, and the willingness to convert their Academic Convenor portion to an academic specialist (with Head of Department approval)
  • A research track record
  • A comprehensive understanding of digital infrastructure and methods as used in the candidate’s own research domain
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with researchers, internal and external, from diverse disciplines, backgrounds and levels of research experience
