The Monash Centre for Electron Microscopy

The Monash Centre for Electron Microscopy (MCEM) provides a world-class capability in electron microscopy to enable researchers to solve major scientific challenges. MCEM conducts innovative research in electron microscopy, and provides advanced instrumentation, expertise and training to researchers from across the university, government and industry sectors. MCEM, together with the Monash Ramaciotti Centre for Cryo-EM, form a node of Microscopy Australia. Microscopy Australia is a national grid of university based microscopy and microanalysis laboratories which provide open access to world-class instrumentation and expertise in nanostructural characterisation capability to all Australian researchers.

MCEM has a suite of advanced instruments. This incorporates 3 FEG-SEMs and a FIB/ESEM covering high resolution, low vacuum and analytical capabilities, including EBSD and angle-resolved CL; 4 TEMs including the Spectra Phi - a custom-designed next generation FEG-TEM with outstanding spatial and energy resolution and multiple fast detectors (under installation) and a double-aberration-corrected Titan3 80-300kV FEG-TEM. In addition, a next generation FIB/SEM is under procurement. This suite is supported by a range of specimen preparation, software and computing equipment. MCEM is located on the Clayton Campus of Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, in a dedicated ultrastable electron microscopy building.

The Opportunity

MCEM is seeking an outstanding candidate for the position of Research Fellow and Application Scientist in Advanced Electron Microscopy. This position will conduct high quality research and provide high level expertise, training and research support in advanced electron microscopy to enable the research activities of the University and other researchers through Microscopy Australia. The Research Fellow and Application Scientist will be an expert in the high-level operation and application of advanced SEMs and/or TEMs and will be involved in support for other SEM’s and/or TEMs and associated analytical and sample preparation equipment

The successful applicant will have a passion for electron microscopy, an in-depth understanding of the theory and application of advanced electron microscopy and will possess sound interpersonal skills, along with excellent written and oral communication skills.

If you are excited at the prospect of enabling and conducting ground-breaking research through the development and application of advanced electron microscopy techniques, we strongly encourage you to apply!

The successful applicant will be appointed at either Level A or Level B, commensurate with qualifications and relevant experience. Please specify in your cover letter the level that you are applying for.

This role is a full-time position; however, flexible working arrangements may be negotiated.
