The Opportunity

Monash University, one of Australia’s top institutions, is seeking applications for a Research Fellow position within the School of Mathematics, part of the Faculty of Science. The Faculty is renowned for offering a diverse range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses across disciplines such as physical, biological, biomedical, behavioural, environmental, mathematical, and computer sciences. With a global reputation for pioneering research, the Faculty makes vital contributions to advancing knowledge, technology, and our understanding of the world.

As a Research Fellow in the School of Mathematics, you will join a dynamic, multidisciplinary research team and collaborate with experts from various departments, including Physics and Astronomy, Earth, Atmosphere and Environment, and external partners like CSIRO, the Defence Science and Technology Organisation, and the National Australia Bank.

In this Level A Research Fellow role, you will make significant contributions to the research efforts of Monash University, developing your expertise in a supportive and collaborative environment. This is a research-focused position, with the opportunity to work on the cutting edge of computational and theoretical Dynamical Systems. Your work will primarily focus on exploring the n-body problem and/or Hilbert’s 16th problem, addressing key challenges and advancing our understanding in these areas.

The successful candidate’s key responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • The conduct of research under limited supervision either as a member of a team or, where appropriate, independently and the production or contribution to the production of conference and seminar papers and publications from that research

  •  Involvement in professional activities including, subject to availability of funds, attendance at conferences and seminars in the field of expertise

  • Limited administrative functions primarily connected with the area of research of the academic

  • Development of a limited amount of research-related material for teaching or other purposes with appropriate guidance from other staff

  • Occasional contributions to teaching in relation to their research project(s)

  • Experimental design and operation of advanced laboratory and technical equipment or conduct of advanced research procedures

  • Attendance at meetings associated with research or the work of the organisational unit to which the research is connected and/or at departmental, school and/or faculty meetings and/or membership of a limited number of committees

  • Advice within the field of the staff member's research to postgraduate students

To be successful in the position, you will need to possess the following:

  • Holds a doctoral qualification in mathematics or a closely related field.

  • Demonstrates strong analytical and manuscript preparation skills, with a proven record of refereed research publications.

  • Capable of solving complex problems using discretion, innovation, and expert diagnostic skills.

  • Possesses excellent planning and organizational abilities, with a proven ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear, concise reports and research documents.

  • Has a clear understanding of confidentiality, privacy, and information handling principles.

  • Works effectively in a collaborative, collegiate environment, maintaining positive relationships with colleagues.

  • Proficient in computer literacy, particularly with software like Microsoft Office, and open to learning new tools and university-specific programs.

  • Has a strong foundation in Dynamical Systems or related fields of mathematics.
