The Opportunity
Monash University is seeking a Senior Infrastructure Engineer to lead the design, deployment, and optimisation of our enterprise and research computing infrastructure. In this pivotal role, you’ll drive excellence across storage, backup, and virtualisation systems—ensuring resilience, scalability, and security in our data centres. As a subject matter expert, you’ll work closely with stakeholders and vendors to deliver robust infrastructure solutions that power Monash’s strategic vision and global impact.
You will be responsible for designing, deploying, and maintaining core infrastructure services that underpin enterprise and research computing environments including but not limited to;
- Design, implementation and maintenance of enterprise high-performance storage solutions (SAN, NAS, object storage), backup platforms, and virtualisation platforms
- Upkeep of data centre facility and network infrastructure components critical for the operation of compute, storage, and virtualisation environments
- Manage and plan the complex architectural design, deployment, and ongoing management of storage capacity, performance, and data protection
- Apply engineering principles, including version control (e.g., Git), CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure-as-code (IaC) to ensure robust and repeatable deployments across both Kubernetes and underlying infrastructure
- Provide expert technical advice to align infrastructure solutions with Monash’s strategic and research goals
- Ensure compliance with information security standards and university governance frameworks.
- Collaborate with vendors and internal teams while fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
To excel in this role, you should possess;
- Deep expertise in enterprise storage and backup technologies, including SAN, NAS, and platforms such as Veeam, Commvault, and Data Domain.
- Proven experience designing and managing VMware virtualisation environments (vSphere, NSX, DFS) and related infrastructure.
- Strong understanding of data centre operations and networking, including hardware installation, cabling, and capacity planning.
- Proficiency in modern engineering practices such as Git, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform and Ansible.
- Skilled in using monitoring and observability tools (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, ELK stack) for infrastructure performance and reliability.
- Ability to collaborate effectively within technical teams and with stakeholders, with strong problem-solving and documentation skills.
- Familiarity with Linux systems, IT security best practices, and compliance standards
