The Opportunity
The Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences is seeking a Research Fellow / Laboratory Manager (Level B) to join the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology within the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute, based at the Clayton campus.
This research-only academic role combines independent research leadership with hands-on laboratory management and technical expertise. You will design and execute advanced experiments in molecular biology, membrane protein biochemistry and structural biology, while supporting the effective operation and capability of the laboratory. The role plays a critical part in driving high-quality research outputs, mentoring staff and students, and contributing to competitive grant and publication activity.
Your Key Responsibilities
As a Research Fellow / Laboratory Manager, you will:

Conduct independent and collaborative research leading to high-quality publications

Design and perform experiments in molecular biology, protein expression and membrane protein biochemistry

Apply advanced structural biology approaches, including single particle cryogenic electron microscopy

Analyse data and prepare figures, manuscripts and research reports

Contribute to the development of grant applications and funding proposals

Provide guidance and supervision to research staff and students

Support laboratory operations, research planning and administrative functions

Participate in departmental, school and faculty research activities and meetings
About You
You will bring:
-
A doctoral qualification in a relevant discipline or equivalent research experience
-
A strong track record of refereed research publications
-
Demonstrated expertise in membrane protein biochemistry and cryo-electron microscopy

Experience supervising or mentoring research staff and postgraduate students
-
High-level organisational, analytical and problem-solving skills
-
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
-
Ability to work independently while contributing collegially within a multidisciplinary research environment

Experience using relevant analytical and computational tools such as cryoSPARC and RELION
