About the role

The Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH) is South Australia's largest accredited teaching hospital and is offering a 12-month full time position comprising of 6-month rotations in Clinical Toxicology and Emergency Medicine. RAH Toxicology Service is the state’s only inpatient Clinical Toxicology unit, providing inpatient care at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and consultative cover to The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Women's & Children's Hospital, and the MedStar Retrieval Service. It manages patients with poisoning, botanical and chemical exposures, and envenoming, and has a significant role in the management of withdrawal states. The service treats 350 admissions and 1100 consults per year with ~ 30% requiring admission to ICU. The Toxicology Registrar role offers a unique opportunity for clinical exposure to both toxicology and addiction medicine and is supported by a structured teaching program.

The Toxicology Registrar reports directly to the Toxicology Consultant, and under their supervision is responsible for direct care deliver to patients admitted to the Toxicology Unit. The registrar will be directly involved in the assessment and management of toxicology cases through both hospital-based service delivery and rostered participation in the provision of consultative toxicology support. The trainee will be involved in regular audit of unit activity, research, and the delivery of Toxicology specific medical education to general ED trainees and other professional groups.

The Royal Adelaide Emergency Department sees close to 80,000 patients per year with a 42% admission rate. It has a catchment area for trauma covering all South Australia and adjacent sections of the neighbouring states and serves as the major trauma centre for South Australia. It treats over 1700 trauma patients per year with 25% of these being classed as having serious injury. In 2017 we moved to a new state-of-the-art facility, costing $2.5 billion, becoming Australia's most advanced hospital, and forming a critical part of the $3 billion South Australian Health and Biomedical Research Precinct, the largest health precinct in the southern hemisphere.  The RAH has all specialities except paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology. It is the Stroke Centre for South Australia and performs endovascular clot retrieval.  The RAH also is the major Burns Centre for South Australia.

Emergency Registrars are ensured their working experience will expose them to a wide variety of emergency medicine experiences and will be supported by a direct consultant presence for at least 16 hours/day, with consultants on call and willingly available during the remain hours overnight.

The Emergency Department provides a structured teaching program in Emergency Medicine. Trainees have access to protected and paid weekly teaching time, and access to the simulation centre at the University of Adelaide. Our consultant faculty consists of college examiners, FACEMS with regional ACEM educational positions, ALS, APLS, EMST, ETM and MIMMS instructors, as well as FACEMS with further qualification in toxicology, ultrasound, prehospital and retrieval medicine. This places us in a great position to provide comprehensive education to our medical officers.
