La Trobe University is seeking a Tissue Culture Officer to support the groundbreaking Plant SynBio Australia initiative. This national research infrastructure program, funded by BioPlatforms Australia (BPA), is dedicated to advancing plant-based gene editing, transgenesis, and biomanufacturing through synthetic biology.

As part of the La Trobe Institute for Sustainable Agriculture & Food (LISAF), this role will contribute to developing new techniques for in vitro plant growth, tissue culture, gene editing, and genetic transformation.

Key Responsibilities:

Maintain sterile plant tissue cultures and generate explants for clonal propagation, gene editing, and genetic transformation

Assist with plant cultivation and protocol development to generate transgenic or genetically modified plants

Conduct molecular extractions and biochemical assays to support research services

Train and support other staff and students in plant tissue culture methodologies

Ensure compliance with laboratory and OHS policies and maintain accurate records

Contribute to research reports for industry partners and stakeholders

About You:

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in plant sciences or relevant experience

Experience in sterile plant tissue culture, explants, and in vitro techniques

Knowledge of transient or stable genetic transformation, such as Agrobacterium-mediated transformation or biolistic bombardment

Strong organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to work independently

Proficiency in data management and laboratory record-keeping

Desirable Skills:

Experience in plant genotyping, phenotyping, or molecular analysis, such as gene or protein expression and metabolite studies

Familiarity with Agrobacterium binary vector design and cloning techniques
