The Faculty of Sciences, Engineering and Technology (SET) is seeking a motivated Technical Officer to support teaching and research within the disciplines of Biology, Microbiology, Environment, and Ecology.

The Technical Officer plays a key role in preparing and supporting laboratory and field-based practicals, ensuring safe and effective learning environments for students and staff.

Working within the dynamic Technical Services Team, the Technical Officer collaborates closely with academic staff to coordinate the technical delivery of practical classes, maintain lab equipment and consumables, and ensure compliance with health and safety protocols. This position offers the opportunity to work across diverse biological and environmental disciplines while contributing to the education of over 8,500 students and supporting world-class research within one of the University’s leading faculties. You will be part of a supportive and agile team that values technical expertise, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Applicants should possess hands-on experience in laboratory support and a strong understanding of health and safety standards. The role requires excellent organisational and interpersonal skills to manage equipment, assets, and relationships with academics, students, and external suppliers. To be successful you will need:

  • Demonstrated experience in managing the provision of laboratory and field activity support services in Biology, Microbiology, Environment and Ecology.
  • Demonstrated experience with routine maintenance of lab/field equipment, chemical handling and waste disposal processes.
  • Ability to plan, prioritise and coordinate individual and team work activities to achieve goals and meet deadlines in a complex environment.
  • Knowledge of HSW and safety management with demonstrated experience in application of these in a laboratory/field environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to promote the organisational values of integrity, respect, collegiality, excellence and discovery, and a commitment to positively comply with the associated behaviour expectations.

 

 

Qualifications:

  • Relevant biology, microbiology or environment and ecology degree; or 
  • An equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
