Technical Landfill Manager

About Us

Join us at Cleanaway and contribute to making a sustainable future possible, together.

We transform waste into resources and renewable energy.  When you start to think of waste as a resource, it opens a world of possibilities.

As a high growth, ASX listed organisation with over 10,000 employees, our goal is to be recognised by our customers as the most innovative and sustainable waste management company with industry leading HSE performance.  We are Australia’s largest company in this sector, providing essential services to millions of customers and communities nationally.

The Opportunity

As our Technical Landfill Manager in this national role, you will be responsible for setting the technical direction and engineering standards for Cleanaway’s landfill assets across their lifecycle. You will lead the technical landfill group within the engineering function, including landfill design, landfill engineering operations, landfill gas and leachate. Act as the technical centre of excellence for landfill engineering, providing expert guidance, standardisation and assurance across the national portfolio.

The role does not have accountability for day-to-day landfill operations. Instead, it enables best-practice operations by developing standardised engineering frameworks, blueprints and technical guidance that operational teams adopt and execute.

Working closely with Operations, Environmental teams, Program Managers and the PMO, you will play a critical part in embedding consistency, unlocking value and lifting technical capability across the landfill network.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Lead the national technical strategy for landfill assets, including landfill design standards and engineering best practices.
  • Develop and maintain standardised landfill engineering and operational engineering frameworks, including fill plans, fill sequencing logic, cover system optimisation and engineered approaches to landfill development.
  • Establish and own national engineering blueprints, templates and technical standards that enable consistent landfill performance across sites.
  • Provide technical leadership for landfill gas and leachate systems nationally, including technical scope definition, optimisation and assurance.
  • Partner with the PMO and Program Managers to support and technically govern the delivery of landfill gas and leachate infrastructure projects.
  • Provide technical input into the commercial optimisation and monetisation of landfill gas, in collaboration with internal stakeholders.
  • Provide high-level technical advice, design reviews and engineering support to site and project teams.
  • Work closely with Operations and Environmental teams to ensure engineering approaches align with operational needs, environmental approvals and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead and develop a diverse national technical team, fostering collaboration, capability uplift and a strong culture of technical excellence.
  • Influence outcomes through strong leadership, credibility and relationships — leading without direct operational authority.

About You

  • Tertiary qualifications in Engineering (Civil, Environmental, Geotechnical or related discipline).
  • Extensive experience in landfill engineering, including design, staging, construction methodologies and system optimisation.
  • Strong technical understanding of landfill development, cover systems, stormwater, landfill gas and leachate infrastructure.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and embedding engineering standards, frameworks and best-practice methodologies.
  • Ability to translate technical requirements into clear, practical guidance that operational teams can adopt.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and leadership capability, with experience working across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Proven ability to influence, coach and lead in complex environments without direct line authority.
