Job Summary: The Transportation Maintenance Technician assists in maintaining and repairing parking deck gates. Maintains parking facilities and Campus roadways. Facilitates traffic flow within the University. Installs and maintains traffic and parking signage, pavement markings, and regulatory markings on curbs and sidewalks. Assists with Athletic and other special events on Campus.
Additional Department Summary: Works two different schedules through the year. (1) Fall/Spring Schedule (mid-August to mid-May): Monday - Friday 5:00am to 2:00pm (shift floater). May fill in as needed and on short notice to cover other day shifts, such as coming in at 6:00am, working until 7:00pm, or working the evening shift from 3:00pm to 11:00pm. (2) Summer Schedule (mid-May to mid-August): Monday - Thursday 9:30pm to 7:30am.
Required Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma or GED and two (2) years of maintenance, warehouse, or construction experience; OR post-secondary school training in mechanical or electronic repair and one (1) year of maintenance, warehouse, or construction experience.
Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Must be able to work flexible and extended hours on short notice, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions.
Final candidates must submit to and successfully pass a post-offer drug screen.
Skills and Knowledge: Basic math skills. Ability to read, write, and follow verbal and written instructions. Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions. Ability to become familiar with locations on the University of Alabama campus. Ability to learn University/department specific software, systems, and devices. Ability to learn to perform mechanical and electronic repairs to parking deck gates. Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds. Must be able to lift, handle, and maneuver the tools, materials, and supplies of the job to include, but not limited to, bags of Sakrete and cold patch, temporary stop signs, street signs, Yodocks, and barricades.
Preferred Qualifications: Certified forklift operator. Mechanical/Electronic troubleshooting and repair work. Two (2) years of work experience in automobile maintenance, warehouse, automotive retail, stocking/receiving, construction, and/or another manual labor role. Experience working outdoors.
