About the Role

Are Media is looking for a Head of Email to join our Audience team. We want someone with a commercial instinct and a growth mindset who understands the power of email as a direct channel and a place where we can build genuine habit, deepen loyalty and drive meaningful revenue.

This is a hands-on leadership role. You'll be equally at home pulling apart a template to diagnose a performance issue as you are presenting an email growth strategy to the senior leadership team. Reporting to the Head of Audience, you'll set the vision, own the metrics and work shoulder-to-shoulder with editors, commercial and data teams to make email a genuine competitive advantage across our portfolio.

The best candidate won't just extract value from our audiences. They'll be obsessed with providing value to them: the right content, at the right moment, building a relationship that keeps readers coming back.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Grow Are Media's email database and deepen engagement across the portfolio, with strategies focused on acquisition, retention and re-engagement
  • Refine EDM strategy per brand, set up automation workflows (welcome series, re-engagement, cross-pollination between brands) and run ongoing experimentation including A/B testing subject lines, content formats, send times and gated content
  • Ensure newsletters consistently drive readers back to our owned platforms, contributing to pageview targets across brands
  • Provide regular, actionable performance insights to stakeholders at all levels, from editors who need to understand a format's performance to leadership tracking portfolio-wide KPIs
  • Manage the Sailthru platform relationship, including access, training and troubleshooting
  • Maintain portfolio-wide email standards and best-practice guides that editors can actually use
  • Work closely with commercial to support how email is packaged and sold, both as part of cross-platform deals and standalone solus EDMs, and help identify new email products, formats and audience segments that contribute to revenue targets
  • Act as the operational bridge between editorial and commercial, ensuring advertiser needs are met without compromising the reader experience

Skills and Experience

  • 5+ years in email marketing, ideally in media, publishing or a multi-brand environment
  • A commercial mindset: you understand how email fits into a broader revenue picture and can speak credibly to both editorial and sales teams
  • Strong understanding of how ESPs, CDPs (e.g. Segment) and analytics platforms connect, and how to use that integration commercially
  • Experience with audience growth tactics: list building, retention, re-engagement
  • Comfort working with data and engagement metrics to make practical decisions
  • Excellent stakeholder management, with the ability to work across editorial, commercial, data and marketing without losing the thread
  • Highly organised and operationally strong, able to manage a busy portfolio without dropping the ball
  • Knows when to roll up their sleeves and when to delegate: hands-on but not stuck in the weeds
