Department Summary

The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art has an extensive education department that manages programs for K-12, community, and university audiences that further the museum’s mission and are supported by state and federal grants, foundations, fees, and fundraising. The department serves a number of specific audiences, including students of all ages, visitors with disabilities families, teachers, immigrants, and the community at large. Tour and post-tour programs serve over 3,500 children annually.

Position Summary

(Hybrid-eligible) The Museum Educator develops, implements, and evaluates educational programs for diverse audiences including K-12 students, children with disabilities, students, university students, families, and community members. This role serves as the main point of contact between the museum and local schools, aligning museum resources with educational goals and state standards. The Museum Educator also oversees the docent program and instructs a variety of activities, including K-12 post-tour sessions, studio classes, and community workshops. Reporting to the Director of Education, the Museum Educator works collaboratively to create meaningful, engaging experiences that foster learning, creativity, and critical thinking. Additionally, this role provides administrative support to the Director of Education, handling tasks such as travel arrangements, accounts payable, and coordinating program logistics.

Minimum Requirements

• Associate's Degree and three years of work experience (paid or volunteer) supporting community programs that serve children, youth or adults OR
• Bachelor's Degree and one year of work experience (paid or volunteer) one year of which must be working in youth development programs, adult education, teaching, program delivery or related functions OR
• Five years experience in a field related to the duties of the position AND a high school diploma or equivalent.
AND

• Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated skill to work with diverse audiences.
• Demonstrated skill to use computers for word processing, data management, and communications.

Professional Competencies

• Strong editing and proofing, and attention to detail; independent judgment.
• Strong analytical skills managing multiple projects in a complex organization and creative abilities.
• Proficient with FileMaker Pro, Microsoft Office software suite, including the ability to format, filter, and use basic formulas within Excel; proven graphics computer skills, and database applications.
• Strong organizational and communication skills with museum volunteers (Docents) and school teachers/administrators/curatorial and event staff; maintain a high level of professionalism.
• Ability to set priorities, take initiative, be proactive and follow-up, and manage tour scheduling and docent scheduling.
• Self-motivated, punctual and reliable; organized and flexible.
• Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends, as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in education, art education, museum studies, or a related field.
• Experience managing a docent or volunteer program.
• Proven experience working with diverse audiences, particularly in K-12 settings.
• 2 years of experience in K-12 education, museum and art education, or a related field working with school-aged children.
• Experience providing administrative support, including managing travel logistics and processing accounts payable.
• Familiarity with state and national education standards, including the Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).
• Familiarity with budgeting and financial tracking in an educational or nonprofit environment.
