About This Role:

The Department of Kinesiology, within the College of Health and Human Sciences, is looking for an inaugural Program Director to launch and lead the new Bachelor of Science in Public Health (BSPH) major. The BSPH major is poised to attract new students with public health and other health-related career interests. The major includes a core set of fundamental public health courses, a three-course practicum series that provides real-world exposure to public health, reinforcing public health electives, and the flexibility to choose additional coursework electives. As a collaborative degree, courses are offered across multiple departments and colleges, requiring cross-campus collaborations. The major will complement the university’s existing CEPH-accredited Master of Public Health program, which is housed in the College of Veterinary Medicine.

The BSPH Program Director will help develop and teach public health courses, lead recruitment of students and faculty, and develop key community relationships with regional public health providers in consultation with the department head, departmental behavioral science faculty members, and supporting units across the university. We invite qualified applicants with the initiative and vision to passionately lead a new academic major within a well-established and collegial department at the nation’s first land-grant university. Individuals who qualify for a clinical appointment will be expected to be productive in their respective area of clinical practice.

Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Facilitate the process to attain accreditation with the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH)
  • Provide academic and operational leadership and management of the major
  • Administrative duties:
    • Provide expert curriculum management of new course and program development
    • Marketing and recruitment
    • Student retention
    • Mentor BSPH faculty
    • Coordinate the degree program with other departments within and outside of CHHS
  • Teaching expectations:
    • Development of new courses
    • Formal instruction within the BSPH major
    • Supervise student practicums
    • Direct BSPH student capstone projects
    • Serve as a graduate faculty member to lead or contribute to graduate student committees, if eligible
  • Provide service to the department, college, and university through participation in faculty meetings and committee service
  • Provide professional service through involvement in professional organizations

This 12-month, non-tenure track faculty position at the rank of instructor or clinical assistant professor has an anticipated start date of August 2021, with competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The Department of Kinesiology offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees and participates in the interdisciplinary MPH program. Comprising 14 faculty FTE, >500 undergraduate students, and 50 graduate students, the department offers a Kinesiology major with concentrations in health science pre-professional, physical activity and health promotion, and applied exercise, as well as a B.S. in Integrative Physiology.

The College of Health and Human Sciences is home to six academic departments (Applied Human Sciences; Food, Nutrition, Dietetics & Health; Hospitality Management; Interior Design & Fashion Studies; Personal Financial Planning; and Kinesiology) and three academic units (Interdisciplinary Program in Gerontology, Family and Consumer Sciences Education, and General Human Ecology Studies). In addition, the college received approval from the Kansas Board of Regents to begin a Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies program. The College enrolls roughly 2,800 students (graduate and undergraduate) and employs more than 115 full-time faculty members in teaching, research, and Extension positions (https://www.hhs.k-state.edu/). What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s of Public Health degree or equivalent graduate degree in closely related field
  • Minimum 3 years of full-time experience in higher education or equivalent public health education experience, with knowledge of professional accreditation standards and their implementation
  • Record of excellence in effective teaching and research or clinical productivity
  • Evidence of relevant administrative experience and managerial skills
  • Record of active service/contribution in the educational and/or professional facets of the public health field
  • Strong written and oral communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree in public health
  • Ph.D. or other doctoral degree in health-related field
  • Demonstrated administrative and/or leadership experience in public health, including experience with CEPH or similar national accreditation standards and their implementation
  • Experience teaching and mentoring students in public health OR working as public health practitioner for a minimum of 3 years
  • Well-versed in online teaching and learning practices, learning management systems and related course technologies
  • Expertise in curriculum development and continuous quality improvement to ensure relevance to position BSPH graduates for current and future demands of the field
  • Demonstrated leadership or experience in public health settings
  • Demonstrated understanding of working with rural and diverse populations
  • Clinical faculty must hold the appropriate board certification and have/be able to attain state licensure/certification/state-approval as determined by the disciplinary area
  • Demonstrated experience or outstanding potential for mentoring junior faculty
