About This Role:

The Nouri lab in the Department of Plant Pathology is seeking a Fellow (Post-Doc) to contribute to an active research program investigating plant and insect-specific viruses, particularly virus-vector and virus-plant interactions. This position will study the biology and molecular biology of insect-specific viruses and vector-borne plant viruses and their interactions with their hosts (plant and insect). Specific duties include:

  • Independently designing and conducting research experiments to study the biology and molecular biology of insect-specific viruses and their interactions with the insect host/vector, as well as the mechanism of viral tolerance of wheat relatives and wheat viruses. Experiments will take place in lab, greenhouse, and growth-chamber environments.
  • Experiments will require advanced laboratory skills in molecular sequencing, molecular biology, and bioinformatics. Specifically  RNA isolation and analysis, advanced PCR techniques, gene cloning, yeast two-hybrid screening, northern and western blot analysis, RNA- seq library preparation, transcriptome, small RNA deep sequencing and RNA-seq data analysis, and traditional virology techniques such as viron purification, RNA/DNA work, protein expression, and purification.
  • Prepare scientific manuscripts, reporting research methodology, results, and interpretations
  • Present research findings in scientific meetings
  • Supervise undergraduate students involved in the research projects.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD in virology, vector biology, or plant pathology

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experiments will require advanced laboratory skills in molecular sequencing, molecular biology, and bioinformatics. Specifically  RNA isolation and analysis, advanced PCR techniques, gene cloning, yeast two-hybrid screening, northern and western blot analysis, RNA- seq library preparation, transcriptome, small RNA deep sequencing and RNA-seq data analysis, and traditional virology techniques such as viron purification, RNA/DNA work, protein expression, and purification.  Previous experience working with plants and insects and practical experience with the above techniques.
  • Self-directed in research planning and execution
