About This Role:

The Fungal Genetics Stock Center (FGSC) was founded in 1960 to serve the needs of the Neurospora research community.  Through the years it has expanded to include many more filamentous fungi and some yeasts.  It oversees the publication of Fungal Genetics Reports and supplies fungal cultures to industrial and academic clients world wide.  The Curator is an essential part of the team that manages the FGSC and is responsible for its day-to-day operations in collaboration with existing staff.  Specific responsibilities include:

  • Filling orders for strains and reagents.  Includes culturing strains, packaging, shipping and entering orders into computer for processing. 
  • Verify strain viability, genotypes and phenotypes.
  • Organize collection for ready access of strains.
  • Accession new strains. 
  • Assist customers in finding correct strains/reagents.
  • Routine maintenance of equipment.
  • Order and prepare laboratory supplies and reagents.
  • Update FGSC databases and web site in collaboration with Throckmorton IT and KSU Library Staff. 
  • Enter new strain information into database, and supply Library with PDFs of deposit sheets for archive.
  • Prepare statistical information for Board of Directors’ meetings and annual reports.
  • Participate in preparation of grant proposals and other materials associated with the FGSC.
  • Assist with management and execution of workshops organized under the auspices of the FGSC.
  • Represent FGSC at scientific and technical meetings as requested by the FGSC Director.
  • Other duties as assigned by the FGSC Director.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Biology, Microbiology, Genetics or related area.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Biology, Microbiology, Genetics or related area.
  • Experience with sterile technique, fungal cultures, especially Neurospora, molecular biology, organizing complex data sets, and managing a database. 

Other Requirements:

  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment

Anticipated Hiring Salary Range:

 $21.63 - $30.23 per hour ($45,000 - $62,882)
