Position Summary:

N/A

As our Platform Engineer, you will join a cross functional team of other engineers and developers to focus on ensuring that the university’s technology platforms are robust, performant, secure, and up to date. These platforms currently include VMWare, NetApp, F5’s, Chef, Github, Docker, AWS and more, but you will play a major role in selecting tools and developing processes to provide computing and storage platforms that can easily be used by other university staff, faculty, and students. You will help develop and maintain monitoring and alerting for critical infrastructure and help with architecting backups and disaster recovery plans for enterprise systems. This will require working closely with other teams and making sure we provide solutions that meet their needs and can provide recommendations for automating processes including helping develop templates and other resources that can help get people up and running quickly.

Your teammates have a strong and varied technical knowledge and are always happy to help move you forward. We strive to keep a great work/life balance for the team and try to ensure that you can have guilt-free time away when meaningful events are happening in your life. The team cares about the organization's success and will help support your role in this.

To thrive in this role you will need an ability to think critically, solve problems, work in a collaborative environment, and have a passion for continual improvement and innovation. You should have an ability to break down larger problems into workable tasks and use programming, AI, and other tools to automate operational work away and improve efficiencies. Experience with VMWare, NetApp, AWS, and/or other enterprise platforms is a plus, but more importantly is a desire to learn and adapt to changing environments and platforms.

We have a flexible work schedule where we can usually accommodate personal circumstances, but you should plan to generally work Alaska business hours between 8 AM and 5 PM so we can best support the University and interact with others.

In this role you will have the opportunity to be part of a cross-functional DevOps team and work on the latest technologies to provide solutions to the University of Alaska. Everyday there is something new and lots of opportunities for growth, including certifications, trainings, and tuition waivers for University courses.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience in a related field (i.e. Information Technology, Software Development).

You should have a strong understanding of Operating Systems, Networking, Security, and how to write software and scripts. Experience learning and applying frameworks and SDKs, writing and using APIs, and using Test Driven Development practices with CI/CD pipelines are a definite plus.
