Job Summary/Purpose: The Telemedicine RN facilitates the use of this technology to serve patients who require remote child abuse services from the Medical University of South Carolina. Telemedicine uses videoconferencing equipment to send and receive medical information and pictures.

Required Minimum Training and Education: Bachelor of Nursing degree preferred. A minimum of one year of work experience as a registered nurse required.  Pediatric experience preferred. 

Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations: Licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required, either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.

Job Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Presents child maltreatment examinations to offsite provider via telemedicine.
    • Establishes contact with patient or caregiver. Assesses willingness and ability to use telemedicine.
    • Obtains consent for telemedicine evaluation using approved consent forms.
    • Facilitates equipment set-up and indicated quality control activities in preparation for appointment including distribution of materials to families, return of forms to provider at home site.
    • Performs physical examination maneuvers and takes photographs as instructed by the remote provider.
    • Makes referrals to community resources, as recommended by the provider.
    • Provides site coordination of community service programs available from hub site serving as MUSC’s on-site representative at Hopeful Horizons Child Advocacy Center.
    • Obtains vitals and lab specimens including urine, serum, blood, and swabs from the oropharynx, genitals, and anus as ordered by the provider. 
    • Process, label, and deliver lab specimens to the courier service.
    • Enter lab orders as instructed by providers. 
    • Clinical documentation according to expected RN license and MUSC standards.
  • Coordinates appointment time with CAC intake, patient, and clinic schedules. Will be trained on MUSC scheduling system and expected to schedule and “arrive” patients in the  EMR.
  • Evaluates appropriateness of referrals with guidance from clinicians and provides feedback to community partners. 
  • Case Management
    • Providing case management for inpatient cases that are returning to the 5-county area served by Hopeful Horizons.  This will include scheduling skeletal surveys, MRIs and their appropriate screenings (such as covid testing), and follow up telemedicine visits.
    • Communicate with and distribute specific written instructions to caregivers.
    • Schedule follow up visits for acute sexual assault clients.
  • Attends twice monthly multidisciplinary meetings with Hopeful Horizons and surrounding community partners.

  • Attend SCAN team meeting (online) when patients from the 5-county area are discussed
  • Other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements: Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking and sitting. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, reach in all directions. Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required.  Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex safe environment and work indoors.  Frequently lift, lower, push and pull and/or carry objects weighing 50 lbs (+/-) unassisted, exert up to 50 lbs of force, lift from 36” to overhead 25 lbs.   Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces.
