ICU Critical Care Internship:

MUSC Health is offering an Internship for Experienced Nurses who want to get into the field of Critical Care, but don't yet have critical care experience. The internship starts February 2022. All interested candidates must complete this online application, attach a resume, and submit no later than Monday, February 14, 2022.  Please also attach your current BLS/ACLS if you have one.

BENEFITS/INCENTIVES

Upon successful completion of the 12-week internship, the intern will receive a $5,000 bonus.  After completion of two years of successful service, the employee will receive a $10,000 retention bonus.

ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP:

This internship is a specialty program for nurses with at least 1 year of experience in any acute care nursing setting.  The program is designed to provide basic intensive care skills that will allow the intern to use critical thinking and research skills to identify, plan, and provide individual patient care in the ICU environment.

Upon completion, interns will be placed into one of 3 critical care areas-ICU, Intermediate Care (CICU), or Progressive Care (PCU).  Interns who participate are required to complete two years of full-time employment in a critical care area within the MUSC Health Columbia Downtown or Columbia Northeast Campuses.

Applicants can receive a four-hour shadowing experience in the ICU with an experienced critical care nurse, prior to deciding to apply for the internship.

DETAILS OF THE PROGRAM

The Intensive Care Internship consists of a 12-week supervised program.  The program is tailored for experienced acute care nurses without critical care experience.  The internship provides didactic and clinically supervised experiences, which will transition the nurse intern into the role of critical care nurse.

Along with the scheduled orientation and weekly conferences, interns will participate in EKG education through hands on teaching and testing.  Interns will attend weekly 4-hour classes and work with a preceptor for three 12-hour shifts weekly.  Interns will work side by side with experienced critical care nurses who were chosen for their excellent precepting, mentorship and team building strengths.

Hours per week: 36 (40 hours for the first 12-weeks d/t 4-hour classroom sessions)

Scheduled Work Hours/Shift: Day Shift, three 12-hour shifts per week, plus one 4-hour class.

Job Summary/Purpose: Under general supervision, the Registered Nurse II assists in providing individualized, goal directed nursing care to patients and families utilizing principles and practices of the nursing process; interacts with other members of the health care team to achieve desired outcomes.

Minimum Training and Education: Associates of Nursing degree required or Bachelor of Nursing degree preferred. 

Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations: Licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required, either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.

For every 100 additional pounds, assistance will be required from another healthcare worker. 20 lbs. of force is needed to push a 400 lb. patient in a wheelchair on carpet. 25 lbs. of force is required to push a stretcher with a patient with one hand. Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected, in one eye or with both eyes. (Continuous) Ability to see and recognize objects close at hand or at a distance. (Continuous) Ability to match or discriminate between colors. (Continuous) Ability to determine distance/relationship between objects; depth perception. (Continuous) Good peripheral vision capabilities. (Continuous) Ability to maintain hearing acuity, with correction.
