Job description:

The position will be the key specialist reporting to the Director, Office of the Tasmanian National Preventive, on a two-year project to comprehensively assess the conditions and treatment of children and young people deprived of their liberty in the Tasmanian community. This project is a state-first, which the Tasmanian National Preventative Mechanism (NPM) is carrying out in partnership with the Commissioner for Children and Young People. The Assistant Director will play a lead role in leading visits and examinations, preparing reporting, and participating in high level discussions with relevant authorities and key stakeholders. The Assistant Director will also play a lead role in supervising staff from the Office of the Commissioner for Children and Young People who join visits. The work of the Assistant Director will be pivotal in advancing the Tasmanian NPM's mission to strengthen protection against torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. The Assistant Director will also work collaboratively with the collocated Office of the Custodial Inspector (CI) in relation to children and young people. Frequent intrastate travel will be required.
