The Royal Hobart Hospital is the tertiary referral hospital for Tasmania, and the principal teaching hospital for the University of Tasmania Medical School.  The Hospital provides most specialist medical services for the region or state.

Department of Critical Care Medicine (DCCM) is Tasmania’s only adult tertiary referral intensive care unit. DCCM has 23 beds with more than 1500 admission per year, and high acuity. The broad casemix includes cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, major trauma and burns, complex medical, surgical and haematology and oncology patients.

$91,442 to $129,391 per annum


Medical Practitioner Level 5-11 in accordance with the Salaried Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Agreement 2017


Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Award

Period of Employment

Fixed term full-time day work (part time hours may be considered) working 80 hours per fortnight commencing 3 February 2020 until 1 February 2021.


Intensive Care Unit, Royal Hobart Hospital


The Registrar is responsible for the day-to-day management of private and public inpatients and outpatients within the Hospital and provides after-hours emergency cover at the hospital as determined by the Medical Staffing Unit.

Essential Requirements

  • General or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia
  • Current Tasmanian Working with Children Registration (where applicable and as determined by individual position requirements).

The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this job is to satisfy a pre‑employment check before taking up the appointment, on promotion or transfer.  The following checks are to be conducted:
1.  Conviction checks in the following areas:
a)  Crimes of Violence
b)  Sex Related Offences
c)  Serious Drug Offences
d)  Crimes involving dishonesty
2.  Identification check
3.  Disciplinary action in previous employment check

Highly Desirable Requirements (Senior Registrar & Transitional Fellow)

  • A minimum of three years relevant clinical experience
  • At least 24 months recent experience in Intensive Care Medicine
  • Completed or near completion of the examination for Fellowship of the College of Intensive Care Medicine or equivalent qualification
  • Applicants with Fellowship in another relevant specialty and with suitable prior critical care experience will also be considered for Senior Registrar posts
  • Transitional Fellow positions must fulfil CICM essential criteria – please see link below
