The Tasmanian Health Service is seeking interest from suitably qualified applicants for a Statewide Specialty Director – Alcohol and Drugs vacancy.
Statewide Mental Health Services, Tasmania plays a pivotal role in the delivery of services important for Tasmanians. We provide a comprehensive suite of services across the areas of Mental Health, Alcohol and Drugs, Forensic Mental Health and Correctional Primary Health.
All our services work closely together to focus on delivering excellence in healthcare to achieve improved outcomes for our consumers, our workforce and the Tasmanian community.
The Alcohol and Drug Service provides treatment and support services to individuals and families affected by alcohol, tobacco and other drug use.
These are exciting times for the Statewide Mental Health Services with significant funded reforms unfolding. The newly created position of Statewide Specialty Director – Alcohol and Drugs constitutes an exciting and rare opportunity to be involved in the transformation of mental health care in Tasmania.
A remuneration package comprising the Agreement base salary, relevant allowances and other entitlements will be negotiated with the successful applicant dependent on clinical experience and seniority.
Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1 to Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 3 in accordance with the Salaried Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Agreement 2017
- Access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Levels 1, 2 and 3 as described in the Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Award.

Alcohol and Drug Service
The primary role of the Statewide Specialty Director - Alcohol and Drug Service is to provide leadership to all aspects of service delivery for the Alcohol and Drug Service, to ensure the provision of high standard, consumer focused and cost effective clinical services to the Tasmanian community, in accordance with Tasmanian Health Service (THS), Department of Health (DoH) and Tasmanian government policies and priorities.
Working in partnership with the Group Director, the Statewide Specialty Director - Alcohol and Drug Service is accountable to the Medical Director - Statewide Mental Health Services (SMHS) for the statewide delivery of the Alcohol and Drug Service, including meeting performance targets and responding to population need in the context of delivering better patient access and better patient outcomes.
The Statewide Specialty Director - Alcohol and Drug Service is responsible for providing high level specialist advice in relation to alcohol and drug clinical practice, strategic direction, policy and relevant legislation to Senior Management within the THS and DoH and to other government and community sector agencies.
Work in partnership with and report to the Medical Director - SMHS, to ensure the delivery of safe, evidence-based patient care and the ongoing strategic development of statewide clinical services within the Alcohol and Drug Service.
- Specialist or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia in a relevant specialty
The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this job is to satisfy a pre‑employment check before taking up the appointment, on promotion or transfer. The following checks are to be conducted:
1. Conviction checks in the following areas:
a) Crimes of Violence
b) Sex Related Offences
c) Serious Drug Offences
d) Crimes involving dishonesty
2. Identification check
3. Disciplinary action in previous employment check
