Job description:

Calling clinicians wanting a change from direct patient care or health information managers looking for a new challenge!

The Team:

Health information professionals working in the Health Information Management Service provide a crucial and unique service by integrating clinical and patient information. We recognise that behind all the information we handle is a patient, and we have a role in safeguarding their information while ensuring it is accessible and of the highest quality. We are a service that bridges the gap between clinical and information technology. We support clinicians by having accessible information and resources to support decision-making. Could you be a health information professional?

The THS Clinical Coding team is a State-wide department responsible for the accurate and timely classification of public inpatient episodes of care across Tasmania. We code a diverse and interesting casemix drawn from 4 main hospitals (Royal Hobart Hospital, Launceston General Hospital, North West Regional Hospital and Mersey Community Hospital) as well as district hospitals and smaller facilities across the state.

Our team offers an inclusive and welcoming culture, upholding the Department of Health Values of ‘Compassion’, Accountability’, ‘Respect’ and ‘Excellence’ (CARE) which underpin how we work together, whilst our key team based values include quality, flexibility, respect, trust and growth.  You will be supported in your role by the Clinical Coding Management team, Senior Clinical Coders and Clinical Coders statewide.

The Role:

The Clinical Documentation Specialist role provides a new and unique opportunity to combine clinical expertise with a passion for data integrity - supporting both patient safety and the Organisation’s requirements to collect and submit high quality clinical coding and associated data for State and Commonwealth statutory reporting purposes.

The Clinical Documentation Specialist works as part of the Clinical Coding Management Team and broader Health Information Management Services team and will work closely with clinical teams at the ward level.  This role will require you to think critically, analyse complex health records, and communicate effectively with teams from various disciplines.  You will possess a strong interest in or proven expertise in clinical coding, with a focus on applying relevant standards and conventions.

These positions will play a key role in implementing a Clinical Documentation Specialist program across Hospitals North, North West, and South. The successful candidates will have overarching responsibilities that include:

  • Developing, implementing and monitoring clinical documentation integrity initiatives to support best practice and patient safety, ensuring quality, completeness, timeliness and accuracy of clinical documentation in the patient health record.
  • Partnering with the clinical coding management team, clinical and other hospital staff to review clinical documentation in health records and provide ongoing education regarding clinical documentation and its relationship to clinical coding and Activity Based Funding (ABF)

You will need

  1. Demonstrated understanding of the health care and hospital environment including knowledge of accreditation and quality standards, across a broad range of specialities.
  2. Demonstrated understanding of clinical documentation and health care record standards, clinical coding standards and processes as well as high level knowledge of activity based funding principles.
  3. Ability to develop and deliver high quality effective education and training to clinical, clinical coding and other hospital staff to support clinical documentation integrity, patient safety and clinical coding requirements, including the ability to implement procedures across a multi-disciplinary structure.
