Applications are invited for accredited Pain Medicine Trainee position(s) at the Royal Hobart Hospital.

Pain Medicine Trainee

Applications are invited for accredited Pain Medicine Trainee position(s) at the Royal Hobart Hospital, Hobart, Tasmania, for the Core Training Stage (CTS) and/or Practice Development Stage (PDS) of the Faculty of Pain Medicine (FPM) training program.

Applicants must meet the eligibility requirements for registration as a trainee with the Faculty of Pain Medicine, ANZCA, and be actively progressing towards Fellowship through completion of the FPM, ANZCA Pain Medicine training program.

Persistent Pain Service, Royal Hobart Hospital

The Persistent Pain Service at the Royal Hobart Hospital is Tasmania’s only tertiary referral pain service and is accredited as a Level 1 training unit by the Faculty of Pain Medicine, ANZCA.

The service operates within a multidisciplinary framework and includes Specialist Pain Medicine Physicians from a range of primary specialties including Neurosurgery, ENT, Rheumatology, Anaesthesia, and General Practice. The team also comprises psychiatry, pain nursing, allied health professionals including physiotherapy and psychology, as well as dedicated administrative staff.

A comprehensive range of general and specialty medical and surgical services are provided including many state-wide services such as cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, extensive burns treatment, hyperbaric medicine, neonatal & paediatric intensive care and high-risk obstetrics. Critical care services are often the patients' first point of contact and are divided into intensive care services and emergency medicine services. As a major tertiary referral centre, we have facilities including MRI's, PET scanners, a Paediatric ICU, and a hyperbaric chamber.

Salary

$138,978 - $194,675 per annum

+ superannuation + access to salary packaging

Salary range is in accordance with the Medical Practitioners Agreement 2025

Period of Employment

Fixed term, full time day work, working 76 hours per fortnight (+10 hours protected training time per fortnight, pro rata), commencing from 1 February 2027 until 7 February 2028.

Duties

  • The Registrar is responsible for the day-to-day management of private & public inpatients/outpatients and provides afterhours emergency cover at the hospital as required.

Essential Requirements

  • General or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
  • Current Tasmanian Working with Children Registration (where applicable and as determined by individual position requirements).

The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this job is to satisfy a pre‑employment check before taking up the appointment, on promotion or transfer.  The following checks are to be conducted:

  1. Conviction checks in the following areas:
    • Crimes of Violence
    • Sex Related Offences
    • Serious Drug Offences
    • Crimes involving dishonesty
  2. Identification check
  3. Disciplinary action in previous employment check.
