Medical Registrar opportunities - Department of General and Acute Care Medicine, Royal Hobart Hospital

An opportunity has arisen for a Fixed-Term medical registrar (PGY3+) position at the Royal Hobart Hospital effective 3 August 2026 until  01 February 2027.

Membership of a physician training program is not essential, but registration to practice in either Australia or New Zealand is essential.

The Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) is the largest hospital in Tasmania with approximately 500 beds. It is the state-wide referral centre for numerous tertiary services for Tasmania and an accredited Level 3 teaching hospital, as well as the community hospital for the Greater Hobart Region.

The hospital offers services in all major medical and surgical specialties including a newly established trauma service as well as ICU, CCU, extensive burns treatment unit, hyperbaric medicine unit, acute stroke unit, psychiatry, obstetrics & gynaecology, and paediatrics. We also have off-site rehabilitation services.

The Department of General and Acute Care Medicine is the largest inpatient medical unit at the RHH. We have on average 60-90 inpatients and admit approximately 15 to 20 per day spread across 5 Acute Medical teams, including a Rapid Assessment Medical Unit (RAMU), and another unit based in the Emergency Medicine department.

Presently the department has a mix of full time and part time Staff Specialists, many of whom have sub-specialty interests. Each unit has two medical registrars and 2 Junior Medical Officers (Intern or RMO).

Medical Registrars participate in the full spectrum of acute care from admission to discharge with the support of a multi-disciplinary team. They also form a vital part of the medical emergency team (MET) for the hospital. 

The 6-month position will comprise two 3-month terms, one of which will be on a day team (Acute Medicine), and the other being medical admitting, including after-hours.  Accreditation for terms for BPT can be arranged through the local Directors of Physician Education. The salary includes 10 hours protected training time per fortnight, pro rata, and Annual Leave on a pro-rata basis, along with other concessions in line with the Tasmanian Medical Award.

Please note that currency with ALS/ACLS (a refresher course every 3 years) will be needed. 

Salary

$138,978 - $194,675 per annum, pro rata + 12% superannuation + access to salary packaging

Salary range is in accordance with the Medical Practitioners Agreement 2025

Period of Employment

Fixed term, full time day work, working 76 hours per fortnight (+10 hours protected training time per fortnight, pro rata), commencing from 3 August 2026 until 1 February 2027.

Duties

• The Registrar is responsible for the day-to-day management of inpatients and outpatients within the Hospital and provides after-hours emergency cover at the hospital.

Desirable Requirements

• Current Driver’s Licence (If applicable to allocated role)

Essential Requirements

• Registration or eligible for Registration with the Medical Board of Australia
• Current Tasmanian Working with Children Registration (where applicable and as determined by individual position requirements).
