The Role

As Secretary, you will be a key leader in the Tasmanian public service, driving critical outcomes for children and young people. You will also hold a statutory responsibility for the care and protection of children in Out of Home Care. This role combines advisory responsibilities to the Government and Ministers with leading the Department’s strategic direction. You will oversee policy development and implementation, manage service delivery and infrastructure programs, and ensure continuous improvement across education, child safety, and youth justice.

In this complex role, you will handle significant reforms and work in a politically sensitive environment. You will collaborate across agencies to support government policy priorities, manage relationships with stakeholders, and lead transformational change. Your efforts will directly impact the lives of children and young people in Tasmania, ensuring the Department’s strategic objectives are met.

You will have proven experience leading a large service delivery agency and a deep understanding of trends in education, child safety, and youth justice. Strong leadership skills are essential, with a demonstrated ability to inspire a shared vision, manage change, and foster collaboration in a dynamic environment. You will be strategic, analytical, and capable of innovative problem-solving.

A strong focus on achieving positive outcomes, excellent communication skills, and the ability to negotiate effectively are critical. You will be able to unify diverse groups and build networks that improve outcomes for children and young people. High levels of integrity and accountability are key, along with a commitment to both personal and organisational growth.
