Job description:

The position contributes to the efficient operation of the Office of the Ombudsman by facilitating the early resolution of complaints by receiving and resolving inquiries and assisting with preliminary inquiries. The position will deal with most telephone inquiries and quick resolution complaints, including those made by prisoners at Tasmania’s various custodial facilities. The position requires frequent communication with members of the public and prisoners/remandees and the ability to maintain a respected profile with government agencies at a state and local level.

Hours per fortnight

73.50 hours per fortnight - flexible options available. 

Duties

  1. Receive and record inquiries and complaints under the Ombudsman Act 1978, and, where appropriate, resolve enquiries and complaints directly with the service provider.
  2. Obtain information and assess complaints, identifying opportunities for early resolution, and formulating recommendations to address issues raised. 
  3. Liaise with complainants, public authorities and other relevant individuals and agencies. 
  4. Prepare correspondence and reports resulting from the resolution and assessment process.
  5. Assist with administrative and clerical tasks associated with the Ombudsman’s functions including use of the case management system and other records management systems.

Essential Requirements

  • Current Tasmanian Working with Vulnerable People Registration (Registration Status - Employment) or ability to acquire one.

  1. Pre-employment (National Police Record) checks for: Arson and fire setting, violent crimes and crimes against the person, sex-related offences, drug and alcohol related offences, crimes involving dishonesty, deception and/or conspiracy, making false declarations, malicious damage and destruction to property, serious traffic offences, crimes against public order or relating to the Administration of Law and Justice, Executive or the Legislative Power.
  2. Disciplinary action in previous employment.
  3. Identification check.

Desirable Requirements

• A law degree or other relevant tertiary qualification

• A current driver’s licence
