Job description:

Deliver high quality and effective animal care and husbandry services to support the Department’s wildlife conservation programs.

About the role

The Wildlife Officer plays a crucial role in the conservation of Tasmania’s threatened species, particularly the critically endangered Orange-bellied Parrot and the Tasmanian devil.

We are seeking applications for casual Wildlife Officers to support the Department’s conservation programs over a 12-month fixed-term period at 5 Mile Beach. These positions are offered on a casual, as‑needed basis, with no guaranteed minimum hours. Hours of work will vary in line with operational requirements and may involve animal husbandry, field-based activities and operational support.

In this role, you will:

  • Provide efficient and effective animal care and husbandry for threatened species.
  • Play an important, hands-on role in conservation programs that support the recovery of Tasmania’s threatened wildlife.
  • Occasionally get out in nature to monitor populations and collect data to guide future conservation efforts.
  • Assist coordinators with reliable support to maintain seamless day-to-day operations.

Our ideal candidate has

  • Experience caring for Australian native animals in captivity.
  • Hands-on experience conducting field-based wildlife surveys.
  • Strong administrative, organisational and time management skills.
  • Physical capability to undertake tasks associated with animal care and facility maintenance.
