Job description:

The Chief Tourism Operations Officer is a senior executive leadership role within the Port Arthur Historic Site Management Authority (PAHSMA) and a member of the Executive Leadership Team.
  • Conserving our heritage and convict history – and sharing this with visitors and with the world
  • Leaders in conservation management and tourism with three sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List
  • Unique opportunity for a strategic and astute leader to achieve commercial and heritage outcomes

The Port Arthur Historic Site Management Authority (PAHSMA) is the custodian of some of Australia’s most profound cultural landscapes, recognised for their global heritage value.  Established to preserve and protect the Port Arthur Historic Site, PAHSMA is also responsible for managing the Coal Mines Historic Site and Cascades Female Factory.  Together, they form part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Australian Convict Sites and are of international significance.

At its core, PAHSMA connects people with a complex history to inspire understanding, deepen engagement, and shaping appreciation of the past for future generations.  PAHSMA’s mission is to lead in conserving, creating and sharing these extraordinary places, while delivering cultural, social, environmental and economic benefits.

Operating as a statutory authority and Government Business Enterprise, PAHSMA balances world class conservation with sustainable tourism and visitor experience.  PAHSMA’s people are united by a shared purpose to protect places of global significance and bring their stories to life in ways that are authentic and impactful.

Port Arthur is one of the most visited destinations in Lutruwita/Tasmania and a key driver of economic activity in the region. Unlike many heritage organisations in Australia and also internationally, we generate approximately 80 per cent of the revenue required to sustain our operations, visitor experiences and conservation commitments.

The Chief Tourism Operations Officer is a newly created role at PAHSMA that leads a diverse tourism, hospitality, retail, events and visitor services portfolio to welcome visitors from around the world while ensuring long-term financial sustainability of the organisation and the sites.

This role requires a commercially astute leader who can optimise revenue, enhance visitor yield and build organisational capability, while respecting the heritage values that make our sites globally significant.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a senior leader in the tourism, events or hospitality sectors who is driven by purpose, inspired by complex challenges and motivated by achieving outstanding commercial and community outcomes in a unique and significant organisation and sites.

Please contact the consultants assisting PAHSMA to obtain the link to the Information for Candidates micro-site that has more information on PAHSMA, our sites, the role and the application requirements.
