Job description:

Provide high-level professional archives services to manage, preserve and provide access to State Library and Archives of Tasmania collections and services, meeting the functional requirements of the Archives Act.

Libraries Tasmania is responsible for Tasmania's public library network, covering 47 locations statewide, and for the State Library and Archives of Tasmania. The State Library and Archives preserves and shares Tasmania's documentary heritage and works with communities and government agencies across the state to ensure that diverse stories, records, and histories are collected and accessible for future generations.

About the role

The position works across two sites in greater Hobart as part of the Government Transfer Team and works alongside the Collection Care Team, the Office of the State Archivist and the State Library and Archives Services Team. Hobart offers an excellent lifestyle, combining access to stunning national parks, beaches, and outdoor recreation with the amenities of a vibrant regional capital. It is known for its strong cultural sector and has been recognised as a UNESCO City of Literature.

The Tasmanian Archives and Special Collections unit operates within the State Library and Archives of Tasmania. This role contributes to the management, preservation, and accessibility of Tasmania's state archives collections, with a particular focus on government transfers coming to the archives under the Archives Act.  

About You

We are seeking a collaborative, proactive, and focused professional who is passionate about preserving Tasmania's state records and ensuring that these records are kept for future generations.

You will ideally bring:

  • Knowledge of contemporary archives and collection management practices.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build productive relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • The ability to undertake research and provide high-quality information and collection management services.
  • Strong organisational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Experience working independently while also contributing positively to a team environment.
  • A commitment to accurate documentation, collection description, and recordkeeping standards.
  • Confidence using information technology and archival or collection management systems.
  • An interest in Tasmanian recordkeeping.

Essential

  • Degree or Diploma in Information Management studies at a recognised university or college of advanced education or a post graduate Diploma in information studies. Eligibility for admission to Associate membership of the Australian Society of Archivists (ASA).
  • Current Tasmanian Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (RWVP) with a registration Status – Employment

Desirable

  • Current Driver’s Licence
  • Relevant post-graduate experience
