Postdoctoral Associate in the McKay Predictive Analytics and Technology Integration Laboratory in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering under the direction of Dr. Andy Perkins.

Salary Grade: Rank and salary will be commensurate with the education and/or experience of the candidate.

Department Profile:

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (http://www.cse.msstate.edu) is seeking two new tenure-track faculty members at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor. For candidates at the Assistant and Associate Professor levels, evidence of strong potential for excellence in research and teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels is required. For candidates at the Professor level, evidence of demonstrated excellence in research and teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels is expected. Exceptional candidates in all areas will be considered, and we especially welcome applicants conducting research in Software Engineering and Cyber Security.


Mississippi State University is designated as both an R1-Very High Research Activity Doctoral University under the Carnegie Classification and as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Operations, Cyber Defense Research and Cyber Defense Education by the National Security Agency. The Department of Computer Science and Engineering has 28 faculty members and approximately 1000 undergraduate and graduate students. The department offers undergraduate programs in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Cybersecurity, and Artificial Intelligence, and jointly administers a program in Computer Engineering with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The Computer Science program offers concentrations in Artificial Intelligence, Systems, Human and Visual Computing, Computational Science, and General Computer Science. In addition, the department offers a B.A.S. in Cybersecurity and three minors: Computer Science, Software Engineering, and Artificial Intelligence. An accelerated B.S./M.S. program allows students to complete a B.S. in Computer Science or Software Engineering along with an M.S. in Computer Science in four academic years plus one calendar year. At the graduate level, the department offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science as well as M.S. degrees in Cyber Security and Operations, Artificial Intelligence, and Data Science. The faculty also direct graduate students in Computational Engineering. Certificates in Information Assurance, Cyber Operations, and Computational Biology are also available. In the last fiscal year, research expenditures amounted to over 4.6 million dollars. Core research areas for the department are cyber security, artificial intelligence, computational science, visualization and graphics, bioinformatics, parallel and distributed computing, software engineering, human-robot interaction, augmented and virtual reality, and computer science education. Faculty in the department are active in many university research centers such as the Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems, the Center for Cyber Innovation, the Center for Computational Science, and the Institute for Genomics, Biocomputing & Biotechnology.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Research, analyze, and collaborate on Computational Intelligence projects, direct graduate students, and publish work in related conferences and journals. Participate in planning, designing, and conducting highly technical and complex research projects under the supervision of a supervisor. Analyze research data and provide interpretations, contribute to the development of research documentation for publication and/or prepares technical reports, papers and/or records.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, or closely related degree.

Rank and salary will be commensurate with the education and/or experience of the candidate.

Beginning with a bachelor’s degree: A professional employee with a bachelor’s degree in Marine Science, Computer Science, Data Science or related field and demonstrated competence can begin work at the Research/Extension Associate I level. To begin at the Research/Extension Associate II level, one must have a bachelor’s degree in the required discipline and a minimum of three years relevant experience and the equivalent of a master’s degree. To begin at the Research/Extension Associate III level, one must have a bachelor’s degree in the required discipline and a minimum of six years relevant experience and the equivalent of the master’s degree.

Beginning with a master’s degree: A professional employee with a master’s degree in Marine Science, Computer Science, Data Science or related field, one year of relevant experience and demonstrated competence can begin work at the Research/Extension Associate II level. To begin at the Research/Extension Associate III level, one must have a master’s degree in the required discipline and a minimum of three years relevant experience and the equivalent of a master’s degree. To begin at the Senior Research/Extension Associate level, one must have a master’s degree in the required discipline and a minimum of six years relevant experience.

Beginning with a doctoral degree: A professional employee with a doctoral degree in Marine Science, Computer Science, Data Science or related field with two years of relevant experience and demonstrated competence can begin work at the Research/Extension Associate III level. To begin at the Senior Research/Extension Associate level, one must have a doctoral degree in the required discipline and a minimum of three years relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Strong background in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Strong publication record in top-tier AI/ML venues (e.g., NeurIPS, ICML, CVPR, ACL, ICLR).
Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, and familiarity with deep learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow). Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

No unusual physical requirements. Requires no heavy lifting, and nearly all work is performed in a comfortable indoor facility.
