Position Summary

Michigan State University invites applications for the position of University Attending Veterinarian and Director of Campus Animal Resources (CAR). The Attending Veterinarian (AV) has oversight of the health and welfare of all animals used in research, teaching, testing, and outreach for the entire university at all on-campus and off-campus sites. Specific responsibilities include contributing to strategic planning and development of the Animal Care Program and facilities, managing the veterinary and laboratory animal care staff in CAR, budgeting and oversight of CAR facilities (including physical plant and maintenance), and oversight of facilities not under direct management of CAR. As a member of the Animal Care Program leadership team, the AV helps provide assurance of compliance with regulatory and accreditation bodies and foster strong communications with investigators, the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), and the animal care staff.

Required Degree

Doctorate -Veterinary Medicine

Minimum Requirements

Candidates must:

  • hold a DVM/VMD degree or equivalent,
  • be licensed or eligible for licensure in Michigan,
  • have federal accreditation (or be eligible),
  • be board certified (or board eligible) in laboratory animal medicine,
  • and have at least five years of professional laboratory animal management experience.
  • Extensive experience with the AAALAC accreditation process as well as supervisory and budgeting experience are also required.

  • An individual committed to working in a team environment with strong written and oral communication skills is strongly desired.
