Position Summary

The College of Social Science is seeking an Assistant Director of Student Affairs to assist the Director in the day-to-day operations of the Office of Students Affairs and with the implementation of policies and procedures related to academic advising in the College.

Assist the Assistant Dean and Assistant Directors with Student Affairs process, manage, advise and oversee programming for at-risk students at the college level, develop and coordinate the college's internal and external recruitment, develop and facilitate training for new and current advisors, work collaboratively with college advisors, and units in the college and across campus. Understanding, interpreting, and implementing academic policies and procedures, and degree certification, referrals.

Access, understand and interpret the appropriate technology. Maintain confidential student records. Effective one-on-one communication skills and the ability to interpret and implement academic policies for the benefit of students, enhancing the quality of students’ academic experience through effective communication with individuals and groups from diverse social/economic/cultural backgrounds also required. Candidate must have good interpersonal/organizational skills with the ability to problem solve independently and as a team with the willingness to initiate and carry out solutions.

Required Degree

Masters -Student Affairs or related field

Minimum Requirements

  • A Masters degree in student affairs or related field.
  • Minimum of five years of advising and/or academic and student affairs experience.
  • Ability to work as an effective member of a team is essential.
  • Sound decision making ability, as well as excellent communication, interpersonal, and multitasking skills.
  • Expected to have knowledge of undergraduate academic policies and procedures and commitment to working with students from a wide range of backgrounds.
  • Engagement in relevant external professional activities is expected.



Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with MSU advising systems and familiarity with curriculum.
