Single Event Facility Coordinator

Position Summary


The FRIB SEE Facility Coordinator will develop, and maintain the facility capabilities and to assist user teams with conducting experimental studies.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Maintain functional readiness of FSEE beamline, instrumentation, and user controls infrastructure to support user experimental programs [25%]
  • Interface with and support user teams during experimental operations [25%]
  • Plan and execute continuous improvement activities to increase the scientific output of beamline [25%]
  • Coordinate user operations and beamline development and maintenance activities with FRIB Operations and technical support departments [10%]
  • Maintain equipment and process calibrations to ISO9001 standard. [10%]
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in the job classification. [5%]

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of charged particle beam optics, focusing, and delivery systems.
  • Knowledge of ISO9001 standards.
  • Skilled in proactive, strategic, and detail-oriented approaches with a strong commitment to quality, efficiency, and effectiveness.
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems with processes and hardware.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to problem-solve and demonstrate sound critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with others and work effectively in a team environment.
  • Knowledge of industry-safe work practices in the field.



Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

The job requires a bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Physics; three to five years of progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in fabrication techniques, cryogenic systems, electronics, mechanical and electronic drafting and computer systems; and may require experience in the use of CAD and/or related engineering systems, including file transfer; experience in the use of exotic metals, including knowledge of their properties, in the fabrication and assembly of sophisticated research equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Ability to work with export-controlled technologies.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with ultra-high vacuum system technologies
  • Experience with particle accelerator beam lines or other radiation-producing devices
  • Experience with particle detector technologies, including silicon detectors, scintillators, and associated electronic analysis systems
  • Experience with mechanical CAD software, such as SolidWorks
  • Experience with electronic circuit design software, such as Altium
  • Experience with large-scale, industrial control systems, such as EPICS or other SCADA-based systems
  • Experience with user- or customer- interfacing roles
  • Record of publication in radiation device or radiation effects studies
