The Gulbransen laboratory in the Department of Physiology at Michigan State University is seeking qualified applicants for a research assistant I position that will support a project investigating interactions between peripheral nerves and perivascular adipose tissue.

The Gulbransen lab uses advanced cellular imaging and genetic approaches to study the neurohumoral regulation of perivascular adipose tissue. Major techniques used in these studies include immunolabeling, cellular-level calcium imaging with GCaMPs, selective cell stimulation using chemogenetics, RNA sequencing, early life adversity models, and physiological assays of vessel function.

The successful candidate(s) will be expected to:

  • 55% - Perform experimental tests and assays and record and analyze the results. Perform preparatory work, including mouse colony maintenance and model generation, in order to run experiments in immunolabeling, calcium imaging, vessel physiology, and other cellular assays.
  • 15% - Consult with principal investigator and lab members to assist in planning and designing experiments. Researches literature in order to maintain a current knowledge of methods and theory.
  • 15% - Assists in coordinating laboratory operations. Acts as a resource person to internal and external individuals regarding research projects and experiments.
  • 15% - Oversees laboratory needs and orders materials, supplies, and equipment. Operates, calibrates and maintains laboratory instruments and equipment.

There will also be opportunities to participate in professional development programs, scholarly activities such as seminar series, and collaborative projects.

This position is a 12-month annual appointment.  Any offer of employment and or renewal of employment is contingent upon continued funding.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

  • A bachelor’s degree in a biomedical-related field. 
  • A record of research experience in cellular/molecular techniques including immunolabeling in tissue, experience working with live cells, and experience working with genetic mouse models.
  • Work experience overseeing research projects and laboratory operations.
  • Experience operating and maintaining a variety of laboratory equipment.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Desired Qualifications

  • Strong communication skills, a positive attitude, and attention to detail.
  • The applicant should be a team player and must have the ability to work effectively with a diverse research group.
  • Previous research experience in cellular neuroscience, physiology, or cardiovascular science.
  • A track record of effective research productivity (such as research publications).
