Position Summary

Research Assistant I - Kellogg Biological Station (Hickory Corners, MI). - Assists in overseeing and coordinating laboratory and/or field operations, assists in planning and designing experiments, conducts experiments and analyzes resultant data in order to participate in conducting research projects.

Characteristic Duties – Responsibilities

  • Assists in coordinating research and laboratory and/or field operations in order to meet research goals.
  • Performs experimental tests and assays and records and analyzes results in order to provide conclusive data for research projects.
  • Consults with research supervisor in order to assist in planning and designing experiments.
  • Compiles and summarizes results and participates in preparing reports, manuscripts and articles for publication.
  • Acts as a resource person to internal and external individuals regarding research projects and experiments.
  • Performs all field work in order to run experiments.
  • Oversees the compliance to laboratory safety regulations and procedures.
  • Reviews the work of research technicians and student employees.
  • Oversees laboratory/field needs and orders materials, supplies and equipment.
  • Operates, calibrates and maintains laboratory/field instruments and equipment in order to ensure proper functioning, accuracy and compliance with written specifications.
  • Researches literature in order to maintain a current knowledge of laboratory research methods and terminology.
  • Performs nematode extractions, identification, and analysis
  • Provides first level supervision over regular and student employees  

 

Communications – Interpersonal Relationships

Interacts with:

  • Graduate Students - in order to assist in scheduling and performing experiments.
  • Supervisor - in order to receive instructions, exchange information and review data.
  • Peers/Staff - in order to decide daily division of labor and to discuss experimental results and problems.
  • Student Employees - in order to oversee their work, answer questions and check on accuracy of test results.
  • Clients - in order to provide results, protocol and shipment information.
  • Faculty/Researchers - in order to discuss lab analysis and report findings.
  • Administrators - in order to exchange information necessary to facilitate laboratory operations.
  • Sales/Service Representatives - in order to learn about product/services; communicate and solve problems.

Responsibility for the Work of Others

May provide first level supervision over regular and student employees. Those positions responsible for the supervision of regular employees are identified with /S following the title.

Responsibility for the Health-Safety of Others

This position has responsibility for the health and/or safety of others. Responsibilities include safely storing and disposing of potentially hazardous materials and advising workers/students about the proper use, preparation and disposal of materials.

Impact on Programs – Services – Operations

Improper analysis and reporting of data and improper coordination of laboratory/field operations could jeopardize the project and lead to loss of funding, setting back the research work.

 

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in the specific field of research employment, soil science, nematology, plant biology, and/or other related science fields; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in standard laboratory procedures and safety requirements and performing analytical and research techniques in an area related to research being performed; require a valid vehicle operator's license where needed to perform duties of the position.
