Position Summary
The Global Learning Coordinator within the Office for Education Abroad assumes primary responsibility for administering education abroad programs offered through one or more of MSU’s colleges and other academic units, such as the Graduate School and the Office of the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education. The coordinator is responsible for the management of education abroad programs in assigned colleges as well as education abroad advising for majors from these colleges by becoming familiar with the colleges’ curricula and degree requirements and with MSU’s overall program catalog, in order to assist students with identifying programs that contribute to degree completion.
Education Abroad is currently operating under a hybrid modality structure, with staff working three days in person and two days remote.
Core Duties & Responsibilities (90%)
EA Liaison (15%)
- Serve in an EA liaison capacity to the College of Social Science and other MSU units such as, for example, Athletics, the China Office, Office of China Programs, Migrant Service Office and external EA program providers
- Represent EA at the Advisory Council for Education Abroad meetings, academic advisor meetings, and at related campus meetings, as needed
Program Development & Management (40%)
- Manage education abroad programs sponsored by the College of Social Science
- Manage Freshman Seminar programs sponsored by APUE as assigned
- Work closely with faculty directors on budgets (set pricing suggestion for faculty-directed programs and develop budgets for direct enrollment programs), marketing materials, logistical and academic issues, etc.
- Create and maintain program information on the EA database
- Approve and monitor external payments and invoices
- Identify potential provider organizations or external resources for faculty-directed programs
- Maintain regular communication with on-site staff or provider organizations
- Collaborate with international partner institutions
- Organize on-site logistics such as transportation, housing, classroom facilities, etc., for certain programs
- Host international visitors and make site visits/program evaluations abroad, as needed
- Supervise resident directors
- Provide assistance and support, as needed, with all student health, safety, security, and behavioral issues. Manage non-emergency situations abroad (host family conflicts, etc.)
- Actively pursue the development of new programs that enhance MSU’s education abroad program portfolio and that meet curriculum integration requirements
- In collaboration with the education abroad curriculum integration specialist, assist colleges, departments, and faculty in identifying program gaps and provide guidance on options for new program development
- Provide support to the “American Semester Program” as needed.
Student Advising & Support (35%)
- Provide comprehensive student advising and support with topics such as program selection, financial aid and scholarships, diversity abroad, etc.
- Contribute to ongoing orientation programming, utilizing blended learning pedagogies
- Assist the education abroad curriculum integration specialist in the development of college/unit-specific advising materials
- Assist the unit with implementing an effective promotion and outreach strategy for education abroad, with particular emphasis on targeting traditionally underrepresented populations. This may include, but is not limited to assisting with events such as the education abroad expo, regional/thematic promotional events, and program-specific information sessions
Additional Functions (10%)
General Outreach (5%)
- Collaborate with co-workers to staff to present at campus events that OEA is involved in such as AOP, POP, Green and White Day, College Colloquiums, College Fairs, etc.
Professional Development (5%)
- Contribute to the profession of education abroad, which may include attending regional, national and international conferences each year as necessary/appropriate/fiscally feasible
- Contribute to the field of education abroad, which may include producing scholarly publications, conducting outcomes assessment research, etc.
Minimum Requirements
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in a related field such as International Relations, Foreign Language, Area Studies, Communication, or Higher Education Administration; At least three years of professional work experience in education abroad administration at a four-year college or university or at a study abroad organization; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Desired Qualifications
Master’s degree in a related field; experience living, studying or working abroad; demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills; proficiency in a language other than English
