Chinese Social Media Manager

Position Summary

The Office of China Programs (OCP) facilitates and serves major MSU missions in China and related to China on MSU’s campus. OCP supports multilateral and multidisciplinary research collaborations with China and Asia, provides international student success including career development and alumni relationships in China, and advocates for Chinese international faculty, staff, and students by establishing a well-known, functional, and effective profile on campus, in China, and in Asia more broadly.

Different MSU units have been actively engaging with Chinese speaking stakeholders including students, faculty, staff, alumni, employers, partners, and parents/guardians via multiple unit-specific WeChat platforms. MSU is looking for a Chinese Social Media Manager to connect the campus WeChat community and develop a university-wide Chinese social media strategy to best serve our Chinese speaking stakeholders (e.g., WeChat, Xiaohongshu, Instagram, and other platforms). MSU is seeking candidates who have the ability to play a leadership role in international social media communication and contribute in meaningful ways to international student success.

This strategic appointment will help MSU to engage MSU’s Chinese speaking community most effectively and support their success.

Hybrid Work Statement: - ISP is currently operating on a hybrid schedule with staff working three days in-person and two days remote.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Social Media Management (60%)

  • Research and monitor Chinese social media trends and promote MSU brand on WeChat and other popular social media platforms used in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, etc. such as TikTok, Xiaohongshu, Instagram etc. with a goal to increase MSU’s reach in Chinese speaking countries and regions
  • Lead MSU Chinese social media strategy development and implementation with annual and quarterly posting plans
  • Lead and run MSU’s Chinese Social Media accounts, working collaboratively across campus and with University Communications to promote MSU’s brand
  • Track and evaluate social media success through goal setting and various online analytical tools Work closely with International Studies and Programs’ Communications team to make sure all Chinese social media postings and designs adhere to MSU standards and guidelines
  • Based on research, identify topics and styles of social media communication to best engage with various stakeholders, and generate original content in a timely manner to promote MSU and/or any specific marketing campaigns 

Relationship Development and Cross Collaboration (20%)

  • Drive collaboration with MSU communication teams across campus and the existing WeChat community to maximize the social media impact for MSU and be a resource for the campus community
  • Maintain regular effective communication with campus partners including colleges, student services, Chinese student organizations, etc.
  • Supervise the WeChat and Xiaohongshu team including part time student assistants on post generation, video production, storytelling, and other activities
  • Support different units’ WeChat strategy development and encourage alignment across all units 

Secondary Functions (20%)

  • Creative writing, editing, reviewing and translation
  • Continue professional skills development by actively looking for opportunities; this may include taking training courses, attending relevant conferences, etc.
  • Contribute to the field of social media marketing, which may include producing scholarly publications, blogs, etc., conducting outcomes assessment research, etc.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in media, communication, marketing, creative writing, or related fields; one to three years of professional work experience in social media campaign design, coordination, and result evaluation; proficient in English and Chinese languages; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Successful track record in supporting strategy development and/or implementation
  • Highly organized and motivated individual who is attentive to details in daily work
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and appreciation for cultural diversity
  • Strong creative writing skills
  • Experience living, working, or studying in both the U.S. and China
