Position Summary

Oversees the security and safety functions at the Broad Art Museum on the East Lansing Campus. The security manager will be responsible for assessing the risks that these facilities are exposed to and will develop and execute programs designed to promote the safety of faculty, staff, students, and visitors. The security manager will prevent loss or damage to physical assets within the buildings. In alignment with all MSU policies and procedures, develops and implements policies, procedures, and training programs to prevent and/or mitigate threats from fire, theft, natural hazards, sabotage, vandalism, illegal entry, or other situations that endanger the property or wellbeing of the organization or its employees.

Serves as the key contact and point person for emergency management in alignment with MSU emergency management policies and procedures and serves as liaison to the Michigan State University Department of Police and Public Safety for emergency management planning and response. Assists with compiling information for Clery Act reporting and notifications for Clery Act compliance.

Develops and implements policies and procedures that promote safety and security of the MSU Health Care facilities and the students, faculty and staff who work and learn in the buildings. Helps develop and executes an emergency action plan for each building. Plans, organizes, and directs activities in support of the security unit goals, objectives and budget.

Collects, monitors, and analyzes security/safety data. Recommends and implements policies and procedures to enhance effectiveness. Monitor and report on potential Clery Act occurrences; contacts MSU Department of Police and Public Safety (MSU DPPS) for emergency notifications and timely warning needs. Contacts the MSU DPPS for any crimes that occur in the buildings. 

Maintains strict confidentiality, honesty, and integrity of organizational, fiscal and personnel related information.
Using proper University procedures, reports all accidents and injuries that occur in the buildings.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which generally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Security Administration, Criminal Justice or Law Enforcement or five to eight years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in a security staffing role; a working knowledge and competence of complex security and building control systems, card access and video surveillance systems, safety management and emergency planning. Requires computer and software aptitude, with an emphasis on word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software.

 

Desired Qualifications

Three to five years of experience as a security officer or police officer in an academic or university setting; knowledge of MSU policies and procedures: knowledge of criminal statutes and conducting investigations, excellent management and employee relations skills; proven team builder; detail and results-oriented with a proficient application of performance metrics and applications; ability to communicate both orally and in writing, to manage multiple projects/requests and to demonstrate poise, tact, and judgment at all times; a highly professional demeanor as well as sensitivity to confidential matters; demonstrates the ability to handle complex assignments under minimal supervision. This position requires or will require prior to the completion of the probationary period: knowledge of basic personal computer terminology and operations, and ability to use, word processing, spreadsheets, e-mail, and internet.
