Working/Functional Title

Computational Physicist

Position Summary

FRIB is a new premier facility for studying rare isotopes' properties to understand better nuclei physics, nuclear astrophysics, fundamental interactions, and societal applications. The FRIB includes the highest energy continuous wave superconducting heavy-ion linear accelerator (linac) and Advanced Rare Isotope Separator (ARIS). State-of-the-art computational tools utilizing high-performance computing are essential for accurately modeling and high-speed optimization to determine the best operational parameters for the linac and ARIS. Developing novel software packages to enhance ARIS performance is an excellent opportunity for computational and beam physicists.

Major Position Responsibilities

  • Develop parallel tracking and optimization codes for isotope separation, and transport of rare isotope beams in 3D fields of multipole magnets, including misalignments [45%]
    • Conceive and execute studies of primary and secondary beam dynamics using existing software.
    • Development novel simulation codes supporting realistic particle tracking in 3D fields of fragment separator magnets and interaction of isotope beams with wedges and degraders by integrating available codes such as LISE++-core or ATIM
  • Develop ARIS settings for efficient separation and purification of rare isotopes [35%]
  • Complete other duties as assigned within the scope of the role [20%]

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of major programming languages (C++, Python)
  • Thorough knowledge of software development practices and techniques for computational and data-intensive science problems
  • Knowledge and skillful ability to perform parallel computing and utilize scientific application codes.
  • Ability to conceive and execute studies of primary and secondary beam dynamics using existing software
  • Skill and ability to gather, analyze, and present findings by communicating effectively (both orally and written)
  • Ability to conduct interdisciplinary research combining physical sciences/engineering and computing; strong collaboration skills and ability to work in a team environment
  • Ability to analyze and resolve technical problems in a timely manner
  • Ability to effectively work in a team
