Radiation Safety Technologist

Position Summary

This position assists in the development and implementation of all areas of MSU’s radiation safety program and operations, including:

  • Administration of MSU's NRC license, and all aspects of radiation use, storage, transport and disposal
  • Conducts surveys and inspections of research laboratories to ensure compliance with State and Federal rules, regulations, and guidelines
  • Conducts and administers monitoring programs and performs tests and calibrations of radiation detection equipment to maintain compliance with regulations
  • Orders, receives, and transports radioactive materials for EHS and MSU laboratories
  • Assesses radiation emergencies and coordinates the clean-up and subsequent prevention and enforcement activities
  • Develops, maintains and audits quality assurance and license documentation related to MSU radiation safety programs
  • Maintains Federal and State licensure for on and off-campus radiation use.
  • Work with other safety groups to achieve a comprehensive and compliant safety program
  • Recommend to management new methods and equipment for use in radiation work and remedial measures for problems
  • Provide training programs for radiation workers and other staff

This position is hybrid, with no more than 20% of the job duties being eligible for remote work.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which would normally be acquired by completing a four-year college degree; six months to one year of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in radiation safety, chemical safety, hazardous waste, or related fields, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Summary of Physical Demands

  • Lifting up to 70lbs from cart to bench and truck to cart
  • Carrying up to 20lbs for 100ft
  • Pushing and pulling up to 200lbs for 100ft
  • Climbing ladder and stairs, occasionally while carrying equipment
