Unit Position Summary

The Lingo Lab in the Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders at Michigan State University (directed by Courtney E. Venker, Ph.D., CCC-SLP) is seeking applications for one or more Autistic Adolescent Community Research Assistant(s).

The goal of the Lingo Lab (https://lingolab.msu.edu/) is to understand how autistic children learn language and how best to support language development in children who struggle. We are also interested in how autism is depicted in print media (e.g., children’s picture books), and how different depictions might affect people’s views of autism.

We want to involve the autistic adolescent community in our research by working with Community Research Assistants. A Community Research Assistant will help the research team because they know about autism and what it’s like to be autistic.

The Community Research Assistant(s) will help with research-related activities like:

  1. Reading and writing things down about children’s books with autistic characters (for example, about the role that friendship plays in the story)
  2. Sharing thoughts about current research and clinical topics
  3. Keeping notes and details of the research safe and private
  4. Discussing what research results mean
