Position Summary

A Research Associate position in the laboratory of Jeremy Lohman in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Michigan State University is available. The researcher in our structural biology and enzymology lab will conduct research, focusing on determining the molecular structures and enzymatic mechanisms of fatty acid and polyketide synthases. This position offers a unique opportunity for scientists to collaborate with experts, drive scientific discoveries, and publish impactful research papers. The successful candidate will perform chemical biology and structural biology experiments, analyze data, and work with a team to advance our understanding of biological processes and guide drug discovery. Mentoring undergraduate students will also be a part of this role, enhancing leadership and communication skills. Detailed description of work/duties:

   1-Conduct experimental research: Design and execute experiments to investigate the molecular structures and enzymatic mechanisms of biological macromolecules. This involves protein purification, crystallization, X-ray crystallography, cryo-electron microscopy, and spectroscopic techniques.

   2- Data analysis and interpretation: Analyze experimental data using computational tools and software to derive meaningful insights. Interpret and validate structural models, enzymatic kinetics, and molecular interactions to contribute to the understanding of biological processes.

    3-Collaborate in interdisciplinary teams: Work closely with researchers from diverse scientific backgrounds, such as biochemists, biophysicists, and computational scientists, to facilitate a multidisciplinary approach in research projects. Contribute expertise and actively engage in scientific discussions and collaborations.

   4- Publication and presentation of findings: Prepare research manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals and present research findings at scientific conferences and seminars. Contribute to the dissemination of knowledge and advancements in the field of structural biology and enzymology.

   5- Mentoring and supervision: Provide guidance and mentorship to undergraduate students involved in the lab. Assist in their experimental design, data analysis, and troubleshooting. Foster a collaborative and supportive learning environment.

    6-Grant proposal writing: Assist in the development and writing of grant proposals to secure funding for research projects. Contribute to the preparation of research proposals by providing expertise and scientific rationale.

    7-Laboratory management: Contribute to the overall functioning of the lab by assisting in the procurement and maintenance of equipment, ensuring compliance with safety protocols, and organizing lab resources efficiently.

    8-Continued professional development: Stay updated with the latest advancements in structural biology and enzymology through literature review and attending relevant workshops or training programs. Develop new skills and techniques to enhance research capabilities.

Required Degree

Doctorate -Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or Chemistry

Minimum Requirements

PhD or equivalent degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or Chemistry
