Position Summary

Pay Rate: $20.34 - $21.14 upon meeting probationary period requirements. MSU Benefits - Free comprehensive health care for you and your family as well as a 10% contribution toward your retirement; Generous sick, vacation, personal and holiday time. This position is not eligible for remote work. Regular, in-person attendance is required to meet business and customer needs. This position will work Monday - Thursday: 4:30PM - 3:00AM. May be required to work after-hours, weekends, and holidays.
 
This position is responsible for performing cleaning, maintenance, and security duties related to carpet cleaning. Key responsibilities include implementing energy conservation methods, ensuring security by locking and unlocking buildings, and reporting electrical, plumbing, or mechanical failures as needed. The role requires adherence to safety regulations in an assigned area and involves physical activities such as lifting (25 to 50 lbs.), frequent heavy lifting (50 to 75 lbs.), move equipment across multiple floors of buildings, climbing ladders and stairs, overhead reaching, and operating heavy cleaning equipment (e.g., truck mounted system, automatic scrub machine, buffer, extractor). Additionally, frequent bending, twisting, kneeling, pushing, pulling, stooping, as well as extensive walking and standing, are expected. Candidates must be able to understand verbal and written instructions, read chemical, biological, or radioactive warning signs, and wear a respirator when necessary. Responsibilities also include snow removal using a shovel or snow blower, retaining training information related to carpet cleaning methods, equipment, and products, and working alongside student employees while effectively engaging with the University community. The position serves as a liaison with the Department of Public Safety, manages product inventory, and makes independent decisions to ensure cleaning standards are met using appropriate methods, products, and equipment. Work environments vary, requiring both indoor and outdoor tasks, occasionally in harsh weather conditions. Duties may involve working alone in vacated buildings and submitting verbal or written reports as directed.
 
The breakdown of duties are as follows: 
30% - Operate and utilize various carpet cleaning system(s) such as truck mounted system automatic scrub machine, buffer, extractor, etc. Assess carpet condition and pre-treat as needed. 
30% - Set-up, and tear down truck mounted system and other equipment to clean carpets; Load, transport, and move equipment across campus to complete carpet cleanings; Move and rearrange furniture as needed; secure areas during and after cleaning; contact Access Control on security of rooms.
20% - Refurbish, repair, and perform routine maintenance and sanitization of carpet cleaning equipment.
10% - Assess upcoming jobs and maintain communication on progress/schedule to customers and supervisors.
10% - Correspondence through email, training, meetings and professional development.

Minimum Requirements

  • One year of satisfactory work experience is required.
  • Possession of a valid Michigan vehicle operator license(s) is necessary.
  • Frequent lifting of over 75 pounds is required.
  • Familiarity and ability to use common hand tools.
  • Possession or attainment of an MSU forklift operator's permit prior to the completion of the applicable probation or trial period.
  • This position requires, or will require prior to the completion of the probationary period: knowledge of basic personal computer terminology and operations, and the ability to use e-mail and the Internet.
  • Must drive University vehicle to perform job duties of this classification.
