Position Summary(Basic Job Function)

This is a temporary or an on-call position. Provides professional support. Responsibilities may include general business, science, medical, agricultural or other professional support functions. Term: Temps can work two (2) nine (9) month terms with a week break in service in between and at the end of the second term terminate for three (3) months or switch to an on-call. On-Call allowed to work 1039 hours in any twelve (12) month period.

Unit Position Summary

An on-call position is available within Department of Pathobiology and Diagnostic Investigation at MSU. This position requires a veterinary or veterinary nursing degree with significant experience in handling horses. The hired individual would be part of a team conducting an EHV-1 mRNA vaccination clinical trial in horses. The position’s focus would be on basic veterinary care (administering vaccines, conducting physical exams, sampling of horses), working with students and multiple PI’s as well as organization and managing a herd of 30 horses over a 6-month period.

The individual will also be expected to help order necessary materials for the project and follow BSL2 biosafety regulations. The position may also involve basic sample processing and analysis. The hired individual will interact with clinical sciences researchers, IACUC, animal care personnel, as well as with collaborators on this project.

Ability to work independently on challenging problems, good interpersonal and organizational skills, and ability to work productively in a happy and highly motivated group is important.

Experience in a majority of the following areas is required:

1. Experience working safely around large animals and sampling horses.

2. Administration of drugs as needed.

3. Excellent record keeping and organizational skills

4. Experience working in an BSL-2 environment and or experience working with infectious agents.

Must have full Michigan Veterinarian and MI Controlled Substance licensure prior to start date. Requires DVM and significant experience working with horses including taking clinical samples, physical exams, and administering vaccines, and drugs.

Experience conducting clinical trials in horses, experience working with infectious disease agents, some experience working in a laboratory
