MSU Landscape Services has been maintaining campus as a living, learning laboratory since 1905. We are responsible for all aspects of landscape construction and maintenance including snow removal, signage, hardscape maintenance, golf course maintenance, tree care, and general repair on the campus of Michigan State University.
This position will assist in performing responsibilities related to the maintenance of campus streets, walks, parking lots, ramps, site furnishings, hardscapes, and traffic control aids and signs. Responsibilities include equipment operation, asphalt repair, hardscape cleaning & washing, signage and barricade installation/removal & maintenance, site furnishing installation/removal & maintenance, line striping, and other campus hard-surface maintenance tasks. This position will require participation in MSU Football tailgate clean up and participation in the Campus Snow Removal Plan by shoveling, operating snow removal vehicles and equipment, applying ice-melt products, and other related responsibilities.
Job responsibilities are as follows:
- 35% - Assist in the maintenance and cleaning of streets, walks, parking lots, ramps, loading docks, site furnishings, and other hardscapes. Assist in preparing asphalt patch areas as directed. Assists in the installation and repair of site furnishings. Operate trucks, tractors aerial platform lifts, dump trucks, forklifts, front-end loaders, street sweeper, power-washing equipment, paint machines, cutting tools, and related equipment. Apply pesticide applications in parking areas and other hardscape cracks and crevices. Assist with storm water management per EGLE regulations. Instruct assigned support employees in work methods and safety techniques.
- 25% - Assist in the setup, maintenance, installation, removal, and storage of traffic control aids and signs including general signage, barricades, barrels, and cones. Receives practical training on interpreting traffic control work orders. Assist in determining the time and sequence of maintenance and set up operations to assure on time completion.
- 15% - Assist in general cleaning and graffiti removal of statues, patios, bridges, and other hardscapes. Assist in the cleanup and removal of hazardous substances, including body fluids, from streets, walks, parking lots, ramps, site furnishings, and other hardscapes. Maintenance and installation of site furniture and site appurtenances including basketball courts, volleyball courts, and other outdoor event areas.
- 15% - Assist in football tailgate cleanup. Participate in snow plan by shoveling, operating snow removal vehicles and equipment and applying ice melt products.
- 10% - Correspondence through email, training, meetings and professional development. Identifies and mitigates health hazards associated within the working environment. Provides customer service to MSU Community and the public. Responds or informs supervisory staff of complaints, comments and/or unmet service needs.
Minimum Requirements
- Casual knowledge of the tools, methods, and materials used for concrete and asphalt street and sidewalk maintenance.
- One year of experience as a landscape laborer responsible for maintaining hard surfaces (roads, sidewalks, parking lots, ramps, etc.) or an equivalent combination of technical training and experience.
- One year of commercial snow removal experience operating a licensed plow vehicle.
- Possession of a valid Michigan Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certification - Turf (3A), Ornamental (3B), and Right of Way (6).
- Possession or attainment of a MSU forklift, aerial platform, tractor, small-articulated loader, and Toolcat operator's permit prior to completion of applicable probation or trial period.
- Possession of a valid state vehicle operator's license.
- Must drive a university vehicle to perform job duties of this classification.
- Ability to work in variable or severe weather conditions.
- This position requires significant after-hours, weekend, and holiday work.
- Frequent lifting of 26 to 75 pounds and occasional lifting of over 75 pounds is required.
- Based upon a bona fide occupational qualification, the body weight of an incumbent assigned to this classification cannot exceed 280 pounds (equipment limits).
Desired Qualifications
One to three years of experience in hardscape maintenance, installation, and repair. Possession of Michigan EGLE Construction Storm Water Operator Certification.

Work Hours
