Position Summary

The Michigan State University Counseling and Psychiatric Services (CAPS) is seeking a clinician with a specialty in working with an international college student population; fluency in Mandarin is desirable. MSU has experienced a significant growth in recent years in the enrollment of international students, particularly Chinese international students, and CAPS is seeking to augment our current services to serve these populations. We work closely with the Office for International Students and Scholars, and this position will serve as the primary liaison to that office. In addition, CAPS is an integrated mental health facility, working closely with Student Health Services and requiring frequent cross-discipline referral and collaboration.

This position is responsible for the planning, coordination, assessment, and preventative intervention of the center’s outreach initiatives with an international student population. Additional responsibilities include providing psychotherapy services to diverse clientele, facilitating individual counseling and group services, providing consultation, advocacy and crisis intervention services, and other clinical responsibilities as assigned. 

University Health and Wellbeing subscribes to a hybrid work policy with expectation of two non-consecutive remote days per week. 

Minimum Requirements

  • Master’s or doctoral degree from a qualified program in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field.
  • Current State of Michigan Licensed Professional Counselor license (LPC) in good standing OR Limited Licensed Counselor license (LLC) in good standing with capability of being fully licensed within 3 years. Limited license holders must be supervised by a fully licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) until fully licensed.
  • Compliance with Michigan state continuing education requirements to maintain licensure.

Desired Qualifications

PhD in related mental health field; Experience in working with international college students; fluency in Mandarin preferred; design and implementation of psycho-educational programming and outreach activities; experience in brief psychotherapy and crisis intervention; collaborative experience in interdisciplinary setting; experience with diverse college student populations from a multicultural/intercultural perspective. License eligible in the State of Michigan within eighteen months from date of hire.

One to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in counseling in a clinic/agency environment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Licensure in the State of Michigan.
