Position Summary

Pay rate: $45.46 - $54.12 - upon meeting the progression step requirements.  MSU Benefits - Free comprehensive health care for you and your family as well as a 10% contribution toward your retirement; Generous sick, vacation, personal and holiday time. Regular in-person attendance is required to meet business and customer needs. 

This position will inspect, repair, maintain, modify, and fabricate mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic equipment, including electrical and electronic circuitry of passenger and freight elevator systems and powered lifts; performs safety tests in accordance with the State of Michigan regulations.

Job responsibilities are as follows:  
35% - Inspect and maintain hydraulic, electrical, and electronic equipment, including electrical and electronic circuitry of passenger and freight elevator systems and power lifts.
35% - Service, repair and fabrication of mechanical and electrical on passenger, freight, and power lift elevator systems.
10% - Perform safety tests in accordance with State of Michigan regulations.
10% - Project management and customer contact.
10% - Correspondence through email, training, meetings and professional development.

PLEASE NOTE: This search includes two separate postings for Elevator Mechanic I (posting #1112774) and Elevator Mechanic II (posting #1112775). Applicants who meet the qualifications for both levels and wish to be considered for both positions must submit an application to each posting. Applying to only one will limit consideration to that level.

Minimum Requirements

  • Completion of high school education or equivalent combination of technical training and experience.
  • Successful completion of an applicable trade-specific Trades Helper program, or completion of an approved apprenticeship program, or an associate degree, or equivalent education/experience.  
  • Seven and one-half years of experience in the trade that includes seven and one-half years of experience in the commercial elevator installation and maintenance trade and demonstrated ability to independently perform the duties and responsibilities of the classification, or equivalent experience.
  • Possession of a valid State of Michigan Class A or B Elevator License.
  • Possess and maintain Qualified Elevator Inspector (QEI) certification.
  • Expert knowledge of methods, materials, tools, equipment, occupational hazards, and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Expert knowledge of applicable electrical codes, rules, and regulations (local, state, and federal).
  • Possession of a valid vehicle operator's license.
  • Must furnish own hand tools.
  • Frequent lifting of 26 to 75 pounds and occasional lifting of over 75 pounds.

Desired Qualifications

Experience with Motion Control Engineering; certification in IMC-AC, Power of I Control, PHC Hydraulic Controller, GAL Galaxy Controller, Smart Rise Engineering Controller, Hollister Whitney Machines, GAL Door Equipment; Certified Elevator Technician (CET); strong written and verbal communication/interpersonal skills; established problem solving skills; good customer relations/service skills; ability to work as an effective member of a team.

Summary of Physical Demands

Duties associated with this position involve lifting and carrying up to 75 pounds, pushing/pulling, and climbing ladder, stairs, and working from various types of equipment, including scaffolding.
