Position Summary
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Michigan State University seeks a Research and Instructional Equipment Technologist II to oversee and coordinate the daily operations of CEE’s instructional and research laboratories.
The position supports the department’s teaching and research missions by ensuring laboratory spaces, equipment, and instrumentation function safely, efficiently, and effectively. Responsibilities span multiple CEE facilities, including the Civil Infrastructure Lab and other research and instructional locations across campus.
Working closely with faculty, staff, and students, the Research and Instructional Equipment Technologist II plays a key role in maintaining laboratory readiness, supporting hands-on instruction, and enabling research activities in a collaborative academic environment.
This role ensures that the College of Engineering’s Civil and Environmental Engineering laboratories operate safely, reliably, and at a level that directly supports student success and faculty research.
Key Responsibilities
Equipment Design, Fabrication, and Maintenance
- Design, fabricate, assemble, calibrate, repair, and test specialized tools, instruments, and mechanical/research equipment.
- Operate precision machining tools (e.g., lathes, milling machines).
- Troubleshoot equipment issues and provide technical support for faculty, staff, and students.
Laboratory Operations and Coordination
- Coordinate equipment installation, maintenance, and removal across CEE lab environments (e.g., Civil Infrastructure Lab, Engineering facilities).
- Manage supply orders, service contracts, and vendor relationships.
- Maintain records for supply orders, service contracts, and vendor interactions.
- Communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and students to support smooth lab operations.
Safety and Compliance
- Maintain and implement safety documentation, instructional signage, and environmental health compliance standards in accordance with MSU, state, and federal guidelines.
- Ensure compliance with environmental health, safety, and quality assurance standards.
- Maintain training and documentation to reflect updated procedures and regulations.
Instructional and Technical Support
- Provide instructional and technical support for CEE research and instructional activities.
- Assist faculty, staff, and students in developing and executing experimental setups.
- Provide safety instructions for the use of lab and research equipment.
Inventory, Asset, and Space Management
- Maintain inventory, asset records, and documentation in accordance with MSU risk management policies.
- Assist with CAM (Capital Asset Management) asset tracking and strategic planning for equipment replacement, upgrades, or retirement.
- Assist in designing space layouts and equipment flow to maximize lab efficiency and safety.

Minimum Requirements
Knowledge normally acquired by completing a four year college program in Electrical Engineering or Physics and significant course study in Chemistry; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in fabrication techniques, mechanical and electronic drafting, computer systems programming, audio, R-F, and digital electronics; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience supporting academic or research laboratories and maintaining complex technical equipment.
- Industrial trade or technical experience (e.g., machinist, electrician, instrumentation technician). Familiarity with asset management, inventory, and CAM systems.
- Experience with analytical or environmental testing instruments (e.g., spectrometers, chromatographs, or data acquisition systems).
- Strong written, verbal, and organizational skills, including the ability to develop operational and safety procedures.
- Proficiency in Microsoft 365 and enterprise systems such as EBS, Procurement, and Environmental Health & Safety.
- Safety training or certifications such as OSHA, Lockout/Tagout, First Aid/CPR, or HAZWOPER.

Work Arrangement
This is an on-site position due to the hands-on nature of laboratory operations and responsibilities across multiple facilities.
Work Hours
Typical work hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m.to 5:00 p.m., with occasional evening or weekend hours as required.
