Position Summary
This position assists in the development, implementation, and ongoing oversight of University environmental health and safety programs related to hazardous materials management. Responsibilities include supporting the creation and evaluation of procedures for the safe handling, segregation, storage, transportation, and disposal of regulated and non‑regulated hazardous chemicals and biohazardous materials. The role contributes to program documentation, compliance tracking, regulatory interpretation, and continuous improvement efforts to ensure alignment with federal, state, and institutional requirements.
The position also supports the University’s preparedness and response activities for hazardous material spills and releases. This includes participating in spill responses, conducting hazard assessments, reviewing incident actions, and assisting in the maintenance of emergency response procedures and equipment. Additionally, the role helps review and manage University policies and compliance programs necessary to maintain licensure and meet regulatory obligations under agencies such as the EPA, DOT, OSHA, and relevant state authorities.
Minimum Requirements
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in chemistry, biochemistry, or a closely related science field; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in handling hazardous waste and materials, including knowledge of hazardous materials regulations; training as a Hazardous Waste Site Worker and in Hazardous Materials Response; and possession of a chauffeur’s license before end of probationary period; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

- Basic personal computer terminology and operations knowledge. Ability to use email and Internet.

Summary of Physical Demands
Lifting requirement up to four hours per day 100lbs. from 0-54 inches; carrying 100lbs 50ft. for up to 4 hours per day; pushing/pulling up to 400lbs. on a wheeled cart up to 4 hrs. per day; climbing A-Frame Ladder or Stairs with 50lbs. up to 30mins per day.

This job requires exposure to human blood, serum, and tissues; drive a university vehicle that requires medical certification; wear a respirator; work in noisy areas; work with formaldehyde.
