Unit Position Summary

Description: The Genomics & Chemical Ecology Group (https://www.lilabmsu.com/) in Department of Fisheries and Wildlife at Michigan State University is recruiting an employee to join a collaborative research project focused on disrupting the chemical ecology of invasive sea lamprey in the Great Lakes. Sea lamprey rely on pheromones to locate mates.  This project investigates how synthetic and natural compounds can antagonize these pheromone-mediated behaviors to reduce spawning success.  This research is part of a broader effort to develop supplemental control strategies for sea lamprey, which have historically caused significant ecological and economic damage in the Great Lakes.

The selected candidate will lead sea lamprey behavioral experiments in northern Michigan rivers based out of USGS Hammond Bay Biological Station.  Responsibilities include planning and conducting behavioral assays, managing data collection and analysis, mentoring field assistants, writing scientific publications, and presenting at scientific conferences.  The selected candidate will gain hands-on experience in field research design, animal behavior, chemical ecology, and passive integrated telemetry.  Support and training will be provided by the PI (A. Scott) and co-PIs (W. Li and E. Ellsworth) at

MSU.  The primary location is based out of USGS Hammond Bay Biological Station (Millersburg, MI) for fieldwork.

Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in biology, zoology, ecology, fisheries, conservation biology, or related field.  Candidates will have experience conducting field experiments; experience collecting passive integrated telemetry data; leadership experience; some experience with statistical programming with program R.

Desired Qualifications

Expertise in animal behavior, fish biology, and/or sensory ecology.
